Job Description
The Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) was formed in 2021 with the aspiration to become the nation's preeminent academic organization at the nexus of interdisciplinary research, technology, policy, and talent development to advance national security. The Institute grew from the Hume Center, which was launched in 2010 thanks to an endowment from Ted and Karyn Hume.
VTNSI is a national leader in advancing security and resilience through innovative and applied research, empowering the next generation of experts, and building strategic alliances to address evolving national security challenges. We bring together exceptional interdisciplinary faculty, unique research infrastructure, and deep partnerships with industry and government sponsors to execute impactful research and development.
The Senior Enterprise Applications Developer plays a critical role in advancing enterprise business applications, data solutions, and digital transformation initiatives across VTNSI. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this position serves as the Institute's senior technical resource for designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining technology solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance decision-making, and support strategic priorities across the organization.
Responsibilities include:
• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise applications, workflows, and automation solutions.
• Architect and implement integrations between Microsoft Power Platform, Azure services, institutional systems, and third-party platforms.
• Develop secure and scalable data solutions that support reporting, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives.
• Leverage cloud technologies, APIs, and AI-enabled tools to modernize business processes and improve operational effectiveness.
• Collaborate with Institute leadership, stakeholders, IT professionals, and vendors to identify requirements and implement technology solutions.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend innovative approaches that support VTNSI's strategic objectives.
• Partner with the Chief of Staff to evaluate, prioritize, and implement technology, data, and business process solutions that align with organizational priorities, operational needs, and long-term strategic objectives.
Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Business Information Technology, Data Analytics, or related field required.
• Significant professional experience in software/application development, enterprise systems integration, or cloud-based solution development.
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and implementing enterprise business applications and automation solutions.
• Advanced experience with Microsoft Power Platform technologies including Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Dataverse, and Microsoft Teams integrations.
• Experience designing and implementing REST API integrations and connectors between enterprise applications and third-party systems.
• Experience working with Microsoft Azure integration services and cloud technologies to support enterprise application connectivity and data flow.
• Experience integrating data platforms such as Snowflake, SQL Server, Dataverse, and Power BI for reporting, analytics, and operational intelligence.
• Experience utilizing AI-assisted capabilities within business applications using Microsoft AI Builder, Power Automate AI features, or similar low-code AI technologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Due to the nature of the institute's work, all candidates must be US citizens or US persons.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
• Experience supporting enterprise applications within higher education or large complex organizations.
• Experience with programming languages such as C#, JavaScript, Python, or Java.
• Experience with SharePoint Online development and Microsoft 365 ecosystem integrations.
• Experience designing dashboards, analytics models, and data visualizations using Power BI, DAX, and Power Query.
• Experience implementing governance, security, and compliance standards within cloud and enterprise platforms.
