Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to support the modernization of a mission-critical government information system. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience developing enterprise Java applications and a proven track record of modernizing complex software systems within secure, highly regulated environments.

In this role, you will lead the planning and execution of technology stack upgrades across enterprise applications, including Apache Solr with ZooKeeper, Apache Tomcat, Apache Directory Studio, Oracle 19c, and Java/Python-based applications running on Windows VMware infrastructure. You will also be responsible for upgrading and migrating Solr indexes, integrating with Oracle databases and SAP Business Intelligence reporting frameworks, and implementing secure coding practices that meet government security requirements.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with software developers, database engineers, infrastructure teams, cybersecurity personnel, and business stakeholders to ensure successful system modernization with minimal operational disruption.

Essential Job Functions:

Application Development & Modernization

Design, develop, maintain, and modernize enterprise Java applications supporting mission-critical government systems.

Plan and execute application and technology stack upgrades while minimizing operational impact.

Develop and maintain Java and Python applications running on Windows-based VMware infrastructure.

Refactor and modernize legacy application code using current development standards and best practices.

Implement secure coding practices in accordance with federal cybersecurity and compliance requirements.

Participate in code reviews and promote software development best practices.

Infrastructure & Systems Integration

Upgrade, configure, and maintain Apache Solr clusters using ZooKeeper.

Plan and execute Solr version upgrades, including index migration and optimization.

Configure, deploy, and maintain Apache Tomcat application servers.

Integrate enterprise applications with Oracle 19c databases.

Support directory services integration using Apache Directory Studio.

Develop and maintain integrations with SAP Business Intelligence reporting environments.

Troubleshoot application, middleware, and integration issues across the technology stack.

Collaboration & Documentation

Collaborate with software developers, database administrators, infrastructure engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and business stakeholders.

Support system testing, validation, and deployment activities during modernization efforts.

Create and maintain technical documentation, including system architecture, upgrade procedures, deployment guides, and operational documentation.

Identify opportunities to improve application performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

Required Skills:

Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) security clearance.

13+ years of experience in software engineering, systems engineering, information technology, or a closely related field.

A Bachelor's degree may substitute for 4 years of experience.

A Master's degree may substitute for 6 years of experience.

Extensive experience developing enterprise Java applications.

Strong experience developing applications in Python.

Experience supporting applications deployed on Windows-based VMware infrastructure.

Expertise with Apache Solr and ZooKeeper, including Solr upgrades, index migration, replication, and optimization.

Experience administering and deploying applications on Apache Tomcat.

Experience with Apache Directory Studio and LDAP directory integration.

Experience integrating applications with Oracle 19c and other relational database management systems.

Experience supporting SAP Business Intelligence reporting environments.

Strong understanding of secure software development practices and secure coding standards.

Experience modernizing and upgrading enterprise software applications in production environments.

Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Skills:

Experience developing applications using the PrimeFaces UI framework.

Active TS/SCI clearance with an in-scope polygraph.

Experience supporting federal government or Department of Defense (DoD) information systems.

Experience working in Agile software development environments.

Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment tools.

Additional Requirements:

Preferred Work Location: Candidates located in or near Annapolis Junction, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; or Reston, Virginia are preferred.

Telework: This position is eligible for telework in accordance with contract requirements and Government approval. Periodic onsite support at customer locations may be required based on mission needs.

Ability to travel occasionally to customer or program locations as required.

Must maintain all required security clearances and certifications throughout the duration of employment.
