What is a Java developer W2 role?

A Java Developer W2 role refers to a Java development position where the employee is hired directly by a company or through a staffing agency as a W2 employee, rather than as a contractor (1099) or through a third-party vendor. In this role, the developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based applications. Being a W2 employee means the company handles payroll taxes, provides benefits, and withholds income taxes, offering more job security and potential benefits compared to independent contracting. Java Developers in this role typically work on projects involving web applications, enterprise services, or backend systems using Java technologies.

How does a Java developer in a W2 role typically collaborate with other teams throughout the software development lifecycle?

As a Java Developer in a W2 role, you will often work closely with cross-functional teams, including QA testers, business analysts, project managers, and UI/UX designers. Collaboration usually involves participating in daily stand-ups, code reviews, and sprint planning meetings to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. You may also be responsible for communicating technical challenges and proposing solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This teamwork fosters a dynamic environment, helping you build both technical and interpersonal skills while contributing to the overall success of the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java developer in a W2 role, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Developer in a W2 role, you need strong programming skills in Java, knowledge of object-oriented design, and a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools like Eclipse or IntelliJ, frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate, and experience with version control systems like Git are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you stand out by facilitating collaboration and efficient project delivery. These abilities are crucial for building reliable software solutions, meeting project deadlines, and contributing effectively within a team environment.

What is the difference between Java Developer W2 Role vs Java Developer Contract Role?

Job description

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Developer to design, build, and deliver complex software applications within a high-performing Technology team that directly supports business-critical systems across the firm. In this role, you will operate as a subject matter expert, shaping end-to-end application development from system architecture through to deployment and ongoing support. You will influence technical standards, mentor peers, and collaborate across technology and business teams to deliver solutions that are secure, scalable, and aligned to real business outcomes.

Responsibilities Design and develop scalable software applications using Java 17+, Spring Boot Microservices, and Hibernate, ensuring solutions are robust, maintainable, and aligned to business requirements. Build and maintain full-stack solutions by developing frontend interfaces with JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, and integrating backend services to deliver seamless user experiences. Lead system analysis and architecture activities, producing design artefacts including architecture diagrams, flowcharts, activity diagrams, and sequence diagrams to guide development decisions.

Manage all phases of the software development lifecycle, from feasibility assessment and technical planning through to construction, testing, implementation, and post-go-live support. Embed security best practices into application design and conduct post-implementation analysis to validate system functionality and identify areas for improvement. Drive quality across the codebase by implementing and maintaining automated test coverage using frameworks such as JUnit, Cucumber, and Playwright.

Act as a technical authority for senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams, providing guidance on advanced engineering solutions and helping to define development standards and processes. Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, sharing technical knowledge and supporting their development within the team. Required qualifications & skills 5 or more years of hands-on experience in software application development or systems design, with a clear track record of delivering complex technical solutions end to end.

Deep expertise in backend development using Java 17+, Spring, Spring Boot Microservices, and Hibernate, with strong command of Oracle PL/SQL for database development. Demonstrated ability to produce software design artefacts including architecture documentation, flowcharts, and UML-style activity and sequence diagrams. Practical experience managing projects using Agile methodologies and JIRA, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and deliver under shifting timelines and requirements.

Subject matter expertise in at least one area of software application development, with the ability to advise senior stakeholders and guide technical decision-making independently. Strong proficiency in source control practices using Git, with experience working across collaborative, multi-team development environments. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.

Beneficial skills & qualifications Working knowledge of Angular 16+ for building dynamic, component-based frontend applications. Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Devin to accelerate design and coding workflows. Familiarity with MongoDB or other NoSQL database technologies as a complement to relational database experience.

What we offer At Citi, you will work on technology that matters at genuine global scale, collaborating with talented engineers across a high-performance environment where your contributions have direct business impact. This is a role that offers both technical depth and the opportunity to grow your influence across the organization. A hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you structure and flexibility in how you work.

Access to continuous learning and development resources to keep your technical skills current and support your long-term career growth. The opportunity to work on complex, high-impact systems at one of the world's leading financial institutions, with real ownership over outcomes. Exposure to cutting-edge technologies and modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted development tooling, within a collaborative team environment.
