Both roles often overlap in skills and tools but serve distinct functions within the software lifecycle.

How does a Java Automation Engineer typically collaborate with development and QA teams during a software release cycle?

Java Automation Engineers play a key role in bridging development and QA departments throughout the software release cycle. They regularly interact with developers to understand new features and potential risk areas, and with QA teams to design, execute, and maintain automated test scripts that ensure software quality. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint planning, code reviews, and daily stand-ups to align on project goals and resolve any integration issues. Effective communication and teamwork help ensure that test automation efforts are aligned with release deadlines and quality standards.

What does a Java Automation Engineer do?

A Java Automation Engineer designs, develops, and maintains automated test scripts using the Java programming language to ensure software quality and efficiency. Their primary responsibility is to create automated tests that validate the functionality and performance of applications, reducing the need for manual testing. They work closely with developers and QA teams to identify test cases, implement test frameworks (such as Selenium or JUnit), and report defects. This role often involves continuous integration and deployment environments, ensuring that automated tests are reliable and scalable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Automation Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Java, a solid understanding of software testing principles, and experience with test automation frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a Bioprocess/Automation Engineer II who thrives in hands-on environments, takes ownership of complex systems, and can bridge biology, engineering, and software. This role is central to developing, scaling, and sustaining automated workflows across both R&D and production environments.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner cross-functionally with assay development, automation, manufacturing, and software teams to deliver cohesive system solutions and end-to-end chemical/biological workflows
  • Contribute to R&D of complex automated biological workflows on Alamar's ArgoHT system - a next-generation proteomics platform pushing the boundaries of sensitivity
  • Develop and own automation engineering projects on liquid handling platforms, from concept through development to release and sustaining (Hamilton, OpenTron, Bravo or similar)
  • Develop, own, and maintain automation/process code with an emphasis on modularity, maintainability, and traceability (Python, C# or similar)
  • Transfer developed processes to both R&D teams and manufacturing/production teams, with accompanying documentation and datasets (feasibility/concept data, V&V runs, troubleshooting documentation, SOPs)
  • Design and run experiments utilizing modern biological assays/automation (NGS, PCR/qPCR, proteomics, immunoassays, or similar)

Qualifications

  • BS/MS (or higher) in Engineering (Chemical, Bio, Electrical, Mechanical, or related) with 4+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrated experience balancing exploratory R&D work on novel platforms with ownership of established workflows on third-party liquid handlers
  • Experience in scripting (Python, C#, Java...) - proficiency with the fundamentals of at least one core language, with an attitude of continuous improvement and a willingness to take on additional challenges
  • Proven ability to debug complex systems spanning fluidics, robotics, software, and assay chemistry
  • Experience with liquid handling automation platforms (Hamilton STAR preferred; Tecan, OpenTron, Bravo, or similar also relevant)
  • Experience developing or supporting high-throughput automated workflows in biotech or diagnostics settings
  • Strong technical documentation skills (experimental designs, lab notebooks, data analysis, SOPs, V&V documents and reports)
