We have an exciting opportunity for a temporary part-time Electronics Design Engineer - Space Exploration Electronic Systems to join our JETS II team with Nexus, a teammate company.
The Electronics Design Engineer - Space Exploration Electronic Systems will:
  • Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager as part of group of over 45 other Electronics and Electrical Engineers.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for VIPER's electrical power subsystem.
  • Provide VIPER Mission Operations Support (updates to Power Console handbook, Ground Alarm Limit, and tools), including monitoring of live telemetry and subsystem performance.
  • Provide VIPER Mission Operations Console Operations (Post-landing Simulation, Planning
    Simulation, Driving & Safe Haven Simulation, and Permanently Shadowed Region Operations Simulation).
  • Develop and maintain power budgets, load analyses, and fault-response logic.
  • Conduct System Testing: MGRU4 Long Duration and Battery Low State-of-Charge Driving test, Long Term Storage 6-month Vehicle Power-on Checkout Test, VIPER Powered-on Sustaining Test, and VIPER Flight SW Update and Powered-on Sustaining Test.
  • Serve as the VIPER/Lander Power Quality Test Lead (Test objectives and TPS development, and Testbed Dry-run execution).
  • Serve as VIPER Testbed Lab Manager (Monthly ESD Checks, Weekly Cleanliness Assay, Calibrated Equipment Management, and Testbed Enclosure Upgrade Design and Implementation to support evolving test requirement).
  • Document test configurations and analyze results to support anomaly resolution and system improvements.
  • Work directly with or as a Team Lead and associated Electrical Engineers on a given project.
  • Support new designs from conception, analysis, and manufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.
  • Provide design support and guidance in various aspects of Electronics System Development.
  • Be familiar with NASA specifications for Electronics Component development.
  • Develop component test stand architectures for various components.
  • Design and generate electrical component and lab instrumentation test system designs.
  • Develop and or modify LabVIEW code for various test systems.
  • Develop detailed test verification procedures.
  • Work with electrical and mechanical technicians to build and test designed systems.
  • Develop and test various breakout boxes and digital/analog sensor emulation systems.
  • Perform electrical evaluation/selection of instrumentation (pressure transducers, flow meters, pumps, fans, RTDs, Thermocouples, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing test systems.
  • Conduct analog and digital printed circuit board design for various application needs.
  • Develop test software modules to perform specific tests.
  • Work with eCAD designer to develop printed circuit board designs.
  • Work in a laboratory environment, following standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Requisition Qualifications:
This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.
  • Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering and normally possess 5-10 years of related experience.
  • Prior experience conducting Power System Analysis for mission operations /planning and requirement close-out using Simscape (Electrical) to model and run simulations.
  • Prior experience conducting data analysis using National Instruments DIAdem, including data visualization, scripting, and automated reporting for engineering and test datasets
  • Prior experience with Power Supply Design, Power supply soft start circuit design, and switching regulators
  • Prior experience with power supply remote senses, power distribution for PCB layout, Power Supply Phase Impedance measurements, and Power Supply efficiency calculation.
  • Prior experience in test of power supply and conditioning systems.
  • Prior experience with power system stability analysis.
  • Prior experience with circuit design of analog PCB, digital PCB, and power PCB.
  • Prior experience with SPICE Simulation
  • Prior experience with Power Quality
  • Prior experience with bonding and grounding
  • Prior experience with electrical schematic entry and printed circuit board layout tools such as Altium Designer, and version control software like Subversion (SVN).
  • Prior experience with data acquisition systems (especially National Instruments) and LabVIEW code development
  • Prior experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in associated VHDL development environments (Xilinx FPGA using VIVADO tool).
  • Prior experience with microcontroller circuitry design and associated embedded software development environments.

Requisition Preferences:
  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and five (5) years of related engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and four (4) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D. from an accredited engineering school and zero (0) years of related experience
  • Background in Systems Engineering
  • Prior experience with JSC standards and processes
  • Prior experience supporting NASA flight or surface mission operations.
  • Prior expertise working with solar arrays, batteries, converters, fault protection, and distribution architectures.
  • Prior experience with Verification closure (Level 2 and Level 3 requirements / 8070 Standard Compliance)
  • Prior experience mentoring engineers or leading subsystem troubleshooting efforts.
  • Prior experience with telemetry interpretation and real-time monitoring.
  • Familiarity with rover or robotic vehicle operations in lunar or analog environments.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or Excel-based telemetry analysis tools.
    Familiarity with data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI etc.
  • Prior experience with design and testing cable harnesses, design and testing of analog instrumentation systems. design and testing of stepper and brushless DC-DC control circuits, and design and testing of power supply and conditioning systems.
  • Experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers
  • Prior experience in design and test of analog instrumentation systems
  • Project based experience designing, building, testing, and troubleshooting power distribution electronics, battery systems, and other electrical hardware (requirements definition, system modeling and simulation; circuit analysis; PCB design, fabrication, and assembly; harness design and fabrication; requirements verification)
  • Hands on experience in the design, build, and test of embedded systems
  • Prior experience with circuit simulation tools such as OrCAD, Multisim etc.
  • Experience with hardware and VHDL-based development for Space applications
  • Knowledge with Linux application/embedded code development.
  • Familiarity with the Linux operating system and programming in C/C++.
  • Experience in the hardware design of embedded systems (microcontrollers, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, I2C/SPI buses, UARTS, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers designing and building world-class, NASA space-flight hardware.
