What is an iwi?

An Iwi job typically refers to a role within a Māori tribal organization, focusing on the social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being of iwi members. These roles can include governance, education, health, resource management, and community development. Iwi jobs often require knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga, ensuring that Māori traditions and values are upheld.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the iwi position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Iwi representative or leader, you need a deep understanding of Māori culture, tribal governance, and community development, often supported by experience in indigenous advocacy or related qualifications. Familiarity with tools such as governance frameworks, databases for member engagement, and navigating government funding or treaty processes is beneficial. Strong interpersonal, leadership, and negotiation skills are essential for managing relationships within the iwi and liaising with external organizations. These skills ensure effective representation, sustainable development, and the strengthening of iwi interests and wellbeing.

What are the typical challenges faced by iwi representatives in their daily work?

Iwi representatives often navigate the complexities of balancing the diverse needs and interests of their whānau and wider tribal community, while also engaging with government agencies, local councils, and businesses. They may encounter challenges related to securing funding, managing community projects, and addressing historical issues such as treaty settlements. Collaboration and conflict resolution skills are frequently needed, as decisions can have long-lasting impacts on the iwi’s future. By drawing on cultural knowledge and strong leadership, iwi representatives play a critical role in advocating for positive outcomes and sustainable development for their people.
