What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IVR Application Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IVR Application Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or Python), understanding of telephony systems, and experience with voice user interface design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with IVR platforms (like Genesys, Avaya, or Cisco), knowledge of VoiceXML, and certifications in telephony technologies are commonly required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in designing user-friendly and reliable IVR solutions. These skills are crucial to delivering seamless automated customer interactions and maintaining high system reliability for businesses.

What are some common challenges faced by IVR Application Developers in integrating new features with legacy telephony systems?

IVR Application Developers often encounter challenges when integrating new functionalities with existing legacy telephony systems. These systems may use outdated protocols or lack comprehensive documentation, making it difficult to ensure seamless compatibility. Developers must frequently troubleshoot connectivity issues, adapt to varying hardware or platform constraints, and rigorously test to avoid disruptions to customer service. Collaboration with network engineers and thorough planning are essential to overcome these integration hurdles and deliver reliable IVR solutions.

What is IVR application development?

IVR (Interactive Voice Response) application development involves creating automated telephony systems that interact with callers, gather information, and route calls to the appropriate recipient. Developers design and program these systems to interpret voice or keypad inputs, enabling businesses to automate customer service, conduct surveys, or process transactions over the phone. IVR applications can improve efficiency, reduce wait times, and offer 24/7 support to customers. The development process includes integrating telephony hardware, software frameworks, and sometimes AI for speech recognition.

Job description

Broughton Partners seeks a Senior Full-Stack Developer / Tech Lead to architect and build scalable cloud solutions powering our high-volume lead generation operations across numerous brands. This individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities focuses on AWS development, Salesforce customization, system integration architecture, Mulesoft development, and the Amazon Connect ecosystem. You'll own complex implementations processing thousands of daily transactions, mentor developers, and drive architectural decisions across our technology stack. Strong performers will have the opportunity to grow into managing a team of 2 engineers.

  1. Design and implement AWS cloud solutions, including serverless architectures (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions), data pipelines connecting Snowflake and Salesforce, and scalable systems handling thousands of concurrent API calls for lead processing workflows.
  2. Build custom Salesforce applications using Apex, Lightning Web Components, and declarative automation (Flows/Process Builder) for complex lead management workflows and multi-stage qualification processes.
  3. Architect system integrations using REST/SOAP APIs and Mulesoft to connect Salesforce, AWS services, marketing platforms, and contact center systems with proper error handling, monitoring, and retry logic.
  4. Lead technical design sessions and provide architectural guidance for cross-functional projects, making critical decisions that balance immediate business needs with long-term scalability and technical debt management.
  5. Mentor development team through code reviews, establishing coding standards across Python, Java, and Apex codebases, and elevating engineering practices across the organization.
  6. Translate business requirements into technical specifications and communicate technical capabilities as business opportunities to CTO, CIO, and stakeholders.
  7. Develop Amazon Connect solutions, including IVR flows, Lambda integrations, and CTR processing for contact center operations (5% of role, growing as we migrate from Five9).
  8. Optimize database operations across PostgreSQL, RDS, and Snowflake with a focus on query performance, data modeling, and ETL processes for high-volume lead generation data.
  9. Drive engineering excellence by proactively identifying technical debt, proposing pragmatic solutions, documenting architectural decisions, and making build-vs-buy tradeoffs aligned with business value.
  10. Other duties as assigned, including evaluation of new technologies, vendor technical assessments, and cross-team collaboration on infrastructure improvements.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years of professional software development experience required
  • 5+ years hands-on AWS experience (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, S3, EC2, RDS)
  • Salesforce development experience (Apex, Lightning Web Components, Flows)
  • Proven Mulesoft integration experience (must demonstrate with portfolio examples; 2+ years preferred, but flexible for strong candidates)
  • 2+ years in senior or lead developer capacity with technical mentorship experience

Skills Needed:

  • Expert-level proficiency in Python and Java with the ability to write production-quality code in both languages
  • Deep AWS architecture knowledge, including serverless patterns, event-driven design, and infrastructure-as-code
  • Salesforce development skills, including Apex optimization, complex automation design and familiarity with Agent Force.
  • Proven ability to architect integration solutions connecting disparate systems (Salesforce, AWS, Snowflake, marketing platforms, contact center systems)
  • Database expertise with SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL/RDS) and Snowflake data warehousing
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with experience in debugging complex, multi-system integration issues
  • Excellent technical communication skills with the ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor developers, conduct code reviews, and establish development standards
  • Self-directed with the ability to prioritize ruthlessly and push back on unrealistic timelines

Licenses or Certification: AWS Certifications preferred (Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, Developer Associate, or equivalent). Salesforce certifications (Platform Developer I/II) a plus.
