Job Summary

To perform and evaluate various complex tests to obtain data for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment for fertility care.

Responsibilities*
  • ? Perform qualitative and quantitative Clinical Laboratory analyses on body fluids, blood and
  • tissues using automated and non-automated methods.
  • ? Consult with physicians regarding correlation of test results with disease state.
  • ? Perform quality control tests according to procedure and maintain appropriate data
  • recording.
  • ? Assess quality control data and take appropriate corrective action when results are outside
  • acceptable limits.
  • ? Recognize and identify unusual clinical laboratory results.
  • ? Travel to the hospital operating room, or other sites, to assist with sperm identification.
  • ? Assist in onboarding and job-related training for new recruits.
  • ? Assist in the teaching of medical students, residents and fellows assigned to the laboratory.
  • ? Assist in research and development of new methods and procedures.
  • ? Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system or LIS (Laboratory
  • Information System) may be required in certain areas.
  • ? Other related duties relevant to specified lab sections:
  • ? This medical technologist will be mainly responsible for daily operations of Andrology and
  • Endocrine portion of the ART lab, including reproductive hormone testing, andrology testing and
  • therapeutic procedures. This individual will join a team of andrologists, embryologists, and fertility
  • healthcare providers with a longstanding track record of successful teamwork and program building.
  • Responsibilities will include: i) participation in a robust QM/QC/QA/QI laboratory program, ii) endocrine
  • testing, iii) andrology lab diagnostic testing, such as semen analysis and therapeutic technologies,
  • such as sperm preparation for IUI and IVF, iv) sperm cryopreservation and thawing, v) advanced
  • procedures of testicular sperm process and sperm identification and quantification, vi) frozen human gamete and
  • preimplantation embryo specimen logistics, such as specimen inventory, shipping, and carrying out final
  • dispositions. Participation is expected in basic laboratory maintenance, safety, alarm testing and monitoring, and
  • application of high reliability principles and work with clinic staff to improve patient quality of care, safety, and
  • clinic workflows. Opportunities exist to participate in translational research and future cross-training in
  • embryology.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position directly reports to the Lab Manager/Laboratory Director.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated successful clinical experience, demonstrated ability to effectively communicate medical terminology and technical procedures, demonstrate ability to identify and take appropriate actions with clinical results, and demonstrate effective organizational skills within a lab setting.
  • Two years of experience in a clinical or translational research laboratory, and at least six months of experience (within the last five years) in a human reproductive clinical laboratory.

This position requires standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of cryogenic tanks.

Work Schedule

Non-Exempt Full-Time Monday through Friday, days. This position entails some weekend and holiday work on a rotation basis with other colleagues.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
