As of Jul 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for iv tech in California is $23.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $24.42 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an IV technician do?

An IV technician is responsible for inserting and managing intravenous lines and catheters to deliver fluids, medications, or nutrients to patients. They prepare equipment, ensure proper sterile techniques, and monitor patients during procedures, often working under the supervision of healthcare professionals. Certification and knowledge of anatomy, sterile procedures, and patient care are essential for this role.

What are IV Techs?

IV Techs, or Intravenous Technicians, are healthcare professionals who specialize in preparing and administering intravenous (IV) medications and fluids to patients. They work under the supervision of registered nurses or physicians, ensuring that IV lines are properly inserted, maintained, and monitored. IV Techs are often responsible for mixing medications, setting up IV equipment, and observing patients for any adverse reactions. Their work is essential in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings, contributing to patient care and safety.

What are some common challenges an IV Tech may face during a typical shift, and how can they be managed?

IV Techs often encounter challenges such as accurately preparing sterile IV solutions under tight deadlines and managing multiple medication requests simultaneously. Maintaining strict adherence to safety and sterility protocols is crucial, as errors can impact patient safety. Effective communication with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare staff helps prioritize tasks and address urgent needs. Organization, attention to detail, and continuous learning about new medications or procedures can help IV Techs manage these challenges effectively.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

For an IV technician, earning $4,000 a week typically requires extensive experience, specialized skills, or working in high-demand environments such as travel or agency roles. Most IV tech positions pay hourly and may reach high weekly earnings through overtime or multiple shifts, but such income levels are uncommon without advanced certifications or significant experience.

What is the difference between Iv Tech vs Phlebotomist?

AspectIV TechPhlebotomist
CertificationsIV Therapy Certification, Basic Life Support (BLS)Phlebotomy Certification, BLS
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, outpatient settingsDoctor's offices, hospitals, labs
Job FocusAdministering IV therapies, fluid managementDrawing blood, specimen collection
Employer & IndustryHealthcare facilities, outpatient clinicsHospitals, diagnostic labs, clinics

IV Techs and Phlebotomists both work in healthcare settings and require certification, but IV Techs focus on administering IV therapies and fluid management, while Phlebotomists specialize in blood collection. Their roles often overlap in hospitals and clinics, but their specific skills and certifications differ.

Can I live off being a pharmacy technician?

Pharmacy technicians typically earn a moderate salary that may not be sufficient as the sole income for a household, depending on location and living expenses. Many work full-time and may supplement their income with additional jobs or benefits, but generally, it is not considered a high-income career solely based on technician wages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IV Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IV Tech, you need a solid understanding of intravenous therapy techniques, sterile procedures, and basic medical terminology, typically supported by a certification such as Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or IV certification. Familiarity with infusion pumps, compounding equipment, and electronic medication record systems is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for minimizing errors and collaborating with pharmacists and healthcare staff. These skills are important to ensure patient safety, accurate medication preparation, and efficient workflow in clinical settings.

How much do IV techs make?

IV technicians typically earn an average annual salary of around $35,000 to $45,000, depending on experience, certifications, and work setting. Salaries can vary based on location, with higher wages often available in hospitals and specialized clinics. Certification in phlebotomy or IV therapy can enhance earning potential and job prospects.

Job description

Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Experimental Physicist within the Energy Group focusing on hardware development and integration of quantum sensor systems.
The ideal candidate is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult engineering and scientific problems in hardware development and system integration. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead end-to-end characterization, verification, and validation of quantum measurement systems, ensuring system qualification and acceptance for deployment.
  • Design, construct, and field complex scientific instruments in a team environment to support quantum sensor development, including quantum magnetometers, gravimeters, transition edge sensors, and superconducting nanowire detectors.
  • Build and qualify prototype quantum sensor testbeds, translating system requirements and hardware specifications into reliable, scalable experimental platforms.
  • Conduct system-level studies to optimize performance parameters such as electrical noise, thermal stability, and measurement fidelity in cryogenic environments.
  • Perform integration, testing, and validation of integrated quantum sensor systems at customer sites.
  • Develop and implement cryogenic system integration including vacuum equipment, cryogenic cooling systems, low-noise electronics, and electrical noise reduction techniques to enable high-fidelity quantum sensor measurements.
  • Develop custom software for experimental control and data acquisition using LabVIEW, Python, and MATLAB to interface with hardware systems and automate measurement protocols.
  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring novel and highly creative approaches drawing on advanced scientific concepts in hardware integration and system design.
  • Anticipates future scientific needs and the modifications required to accomplish technical goals in quantum sensor hardware development.
  • Leverage engineering and scientific knowledge of internal and external experts to define what is current state-of-the-art, understand deficiency from a real-world application perspective, and suggest technical solutions and roadmaps to bridge such gaps.
  • Propose experiments, publish in recognized scientific journals, present work at national and international level, pursue research projects, and work with and provide support to the wider Energy Group team, national laboratory collaborators (including NIST), and private fusion energy start-up companies in the above topic areas.
  • Documents findings, communicates results to scientific staff and makes technical presentations as required.
  • May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues.
  • Provides directions to design or technical staff and may provide direction to less experienced professional staff.
  • Provides expert guidance and consulting to other staff members working on difficult scientific problems.
  • May participate in program review, both internal and external.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
