What is an IT OT Cybersecurity Engineer?

An IT OT Cybersecurity Engineer is a professional who specializes in protecting both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems from cyber threats. These engineers work to secure networks, software, and hardware that support both traditional business operations (IT) and industrial control systems (OT) found in manufacturing and critical infrastructure. Their responsibilities include risk assessments, implementing security controls, monitoring for threats, and responding to incidents. They must understand both IT security best practices and the unique challenges of securing OT environments, such as SCADA systems and industrial protocols.

How does an IT OT Cybersecurity Engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive security coverage?

An IT/OT Cybersecurity Engineer works closely with both IT teams and operational technology (OT) staff, such as plant engineers and control system operators, to identify vulnerabilities and implement security measures that span across traditional IT networks and industrial control systems. Coordination often includes regular meetings, joint risk assessments, and developing incident response plans that address both digital and physical threats. Effective communication and cross-disciplinary understanding are crucial, as the security requirements and operational priorities of IT and OT environments can differ significantly. This collaborative approach ensures security protocols do not disrupt critical industrial processes while still maintaining robust protection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT OT Cybersecurity Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an IT OT Cybersecurity Engineer, you need a robust understanding of network security, industrial control systems (ICS), and experience with cybersecurity frameworks, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, SIEM platforms, and certifications like CISSP, GICSP, or CompTIA Security+ are often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals address threats and collaborate across IT and OT teams. These combined skills ensure protection of critical infrastructure, minimize risks, and enable secure integration of operational technology with corporate IT environments.
