Job description

SUMMARY The purpose of this posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants to draw from, as needed. Tutors provide academic support to Gateway students, guiding them toward independence and self-direction in their course work. The tutor works in structured and supervised educational settings, such as Racine, Kenosha, and Elkhorn Learning Success Centers and/or other designated areas of a Gateway Campus or Center.

There are three (3) different levels of tutoring which are described below. Under the supervision of the Dean, Learning Success. RESPONSIBILITIES Applies to all Tutoring Positions: Plan and facilitate tutoring sessions in a range of subjects, using collaborative learning methods.

Provide assistance with general and subject-specific study strategies. Provide assistance with Blackboard, WebAdvisor, Gateway email, and other student systems. Initiate student referrals to Gateway faculty or staff as appropriate.

Participate in tutor training and other professional development activities. Participate in marketing and department activities promoting Tutoring Services, e.g., Gateway Open House, New Student Orientation, Gateway Days, and classroom visits. Provide excellent customer service to students and fellow Gateway employees

Maintain student confidentiality according to FERPA regulations. Follow Gateway Technical College's policies outlined in the Student and Employee Handbooks. Maintain consistent communication with supervisory staff and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Perform other job related duties as assigned. Tutor Specialist and Professional Tutor: In addition to the above functions, excluding the one for Peer Tutor, serve as a workshop facilitator, presenting on topics related to overall study skills, such as test-taking strategies, note taking, outlining and writing. Facilitate subject specific discussion sessions.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IN THE POSITION Peer Tutor: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and 3.33 in course(s) tutored

When deemed appropriate the semester GPA may be considered. Current student at an accredited post secondary institution and must have completed at least six (6) college credit hours. Recommendation (form will be provided during interview) Tutor Specialist: Associate Degree with minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and 3.33 in course(s) tutored OR Technical diploma PLUS at least 2,000 hours recent demonstrated relevant occupational experience in the subject area tutored

Professional Tutor: Bachelor's Degree or higher with minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and 3.33 in course(s) tutored. Ability to plan and facilitate professional activities. Other Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (Applies to all 3 levels): To support students in Gateway's eight IT-focused programs, it is desired that a candidate have previous experience with at least one of the following: packet tracers, advanced web and Java programming, Python, C#, RPG

It is also desired that candidates have a background in networking, and/or connecting and securing devices. Demonstrated excellent speaking, listening, and written interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to relate well with students of various academic levels and diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to work well with multiple students one-on-one or in small groups. Demonstrated knowledge of general and subject-specific study strategies and various approaches to learning. Demonstrated ability to work in a high-stress environment.

Demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to students with personal or academic challenges. Demonstrated general knowledge and ability of computer skills, (e.g,. MS Word, MS PowerPoint, or how to access the Internet) SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis

Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available. DIVISION/LOCATION: Learning Success/District- Wide Hours: Up to 29 hours per week FLSA: Non-Exempt SALARY: Peer Tutor $15.00/hour Tutor Specialist $17.00/hour Professional Tutor $22.00/hour CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background/reference check

Employment eligibility for the United States. Gateway does not sponsor employment based visas. Some Saturdays and evening hours may be required.

Two instructor recommendations address academic competence and ability to work with others are required at time of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS: Tobacco-free environment. Exposure to computer screens.
