Job Summary
This is a temporary position with an end date of December 20th, 2026 and a possibility of extending to May 15th 2027 depending on staffing availability.
A Laboratory Support Technician in the CIT Division of Math & Natural Sciences performs operational activities in an instructional laboratory or classroom and provides assistance in support of their daily operation. You will ensure that inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, materials, and instrumentation support laboratory curriculum. The duties and tasks are frequently non-routine and completed while working under minimal supervision. Reports to Director of Academic Programs, Matthew Fhaner.
This position will have no instructional responsibilities
Responsibilities*
Will be assigned to lab courses in the Biology, Green Chemistry, and Biochemistry programs depending on staffing team availability. Courses likely to be primary assignments include BIO 135 (Microbiology) and BIO 326 (Cell Biology). Additional assignments include support duties for BIO 167 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I) and BIO 168 (Human Anatomy and Physiology II). May assist additional courses as time allows.
  • Perform inventory of assigned spaces (no ordering).
  • Provide laboratory set up and support to assigned courses and others as determined by supervisor.
  • Create list of tasks for weekly prep assistants.
  • Maintain updated prep documents.
  • Works with Natural Science Lab Support Supervisor where appropriate to update lab manuals.
  • Maintaining lab space readiness/cleanliness Assist with dishes, lab clean up, and chemical prep where needed.
  • No instruction will take place

Required Qualifications*
  • 1+ years of relevant laboratory work experience or relevant educational laboratory experience
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education and/or experience

Desired Qualifications*
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety policies and procedures
  • Basic understanding of common laboratory equipment such as microscopes, balances, pipettes, etc
  • Record keeping/organizational experience

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
