What does an IT engineering manager do?

An IT Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and supervising IT engineering teams to develop, implement, and maintain technology solutions. They oversee project planning, allocate resources, and ensure that technical standards and best practices are followed. Additionally, they act as a bridge between technical staff and upper management, helping to align technology initiatives with business goals. Their role also involves mentoring team members and fostering a collaborative work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT engineering manager?

To thrive as an IT Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering or IT, leadership experience, and often a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), development frameworks, cloud platforms, and certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help motivate teams and manage cross-functional projects. These skills and qualities are essential for aligning technical teams with business goals, delivering projects efficiently, and fostering a high-performance culture.

How do IT engineering managers typically balance technical leadership with administrative responsibilities?

IT Engineering Managers often juggle hands-on technical problem-solving with managing team performance, project timelines, and resource allocation. While they may still contribute to architectural decisions or code reviews, a significant portion of their time is dedicated to mentoring engineers, facilitating communication between cross-functional teams, and ensuring projects align with business goals. Developing effective delegation skills and prioritizing tasks are essential to maintain both technical excellence and organizational efficiency.

What is the difference between It Engineering Manager vs Network Engineer?

The IT Engineering Manager focuses on leading IT projects, managing teams, and strategic planning within organizations. In contrast, a Network Engineer specializes in designing and maintaining network infrastructure. While both roles require technical knowledge, the manager role emphasizes leadership and oversight, whereas the network engineer role is more technical and hands-on.

How much should an IT engineering manager be paid?

The salary for an IT engineering manager typically ranges from $100,000 to $160,000 annually, depending on experience, location, company size, and industry. Senior managers with specialized skills or certifications may earn higher compensation, and total pay can include bonuses and benefits.

Job description

Weโ€™re seeking an IT Engineering Platforms Architect to lead the strategy, architecture, delivery, and sustained operations of our product lifecycle management (PLM) and adjacent engineering platformsโ€”centered on PTC Windchill products. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience supporting Engineering/R&D, combines enterpriseโ€‘grade platform architecture with handsโ€‘on program and stakeholder management, and is comfortable leading crossโ€‘functional teams through complex data migrations, upgrades, and integrations.

What youโ€™ll do

Own the PLM platform architecture and roadmap; define reference architectures, system boundaries, integration patterns, security/role models, and SLAs across dev/test/prod.

Translate engineering and manufacturing requirements into scalable Windchill designs (PDMLink, ProjectLink), including object model, lifecycles, workflows, and versioning strategies.

Lead Windchill upgrades (e.g., patches, feature packs), performance tuning, and capacity planning.

Program/Project Management

Run the PLM program as a portfolio: build business cases, budgets, and multiโ€‘release plans; manage vendors/SIs and an onsiteโ€“offshore delivery model.

Establish governance, KPIs/OKRs, and changeโ€‘control; provide clear status, risk/issue management, and executive communications, aligning to defined IT process and procedures, where applicable.

Integrations & Data

Architect and oversee integrations

Lead engineering data migrations (assessment, extraction, cleansing/transform, validation, cutover).

Support & Reliability

Drive ITILโ€‘aligned operations (incident, problem, change), user administration, license optimization, and compliance (e.g., SOX, export/ITAR as applicable).

Mentor admins/developers; establish best practices, standards, and documentation.

What youโ€™ll bringMinimum Qualifications

10+ years in IT for Engineering/R&D, with progressive responsibility across platform architecture and program/project management.

8โ€“10+ years handsโ€‘on PTC product utilization (Windchill, PDMLink, SolidWorks, Creo) covering configuration and targeted customization (lifecycles, workflows, OIRs, policies, data utilities).

Proven leadership of endโ€‘toโ€‘end data migrations into Windchill (Bulk Migrator/Loader; PL/SQL or equivalent), including reconciliation and validation plans.

Integration experience with ERP/CAD/MES; strong understanding of BOM/part structures, change management, and release processes.

Strong stakeholder management and executive communication; ability to lead onsite/offshore teams.

Preferred/Plus

Java/J2EE exposure for reviewing custom solution approaches and performance (APIs, JSP, REST/SOAP, XML).

Familiarity with ThingWorx, analytics, and CAD data management at scale.

Certifications: PTC Windchill, PMP/PMIโ€‘ACP, or TOGAF (nice to have).

Success looks like

A stable, secure, and performant PLM platform with >99.9% uptime and measurable cycleโ€‘time reductions across ECO/ECR and release workflows.

Successful migration(s) with zero critical data defects and clean audit trails.
