Wheeler Mission Ministries is a privately funded 501(c)3 non-profit, evangelical Christian ministry whose designated purpose is religious.  We are a Christ-centered ministry which is dedicated to sharing the Gospel and helping those experiencing homelessness and those in need.  Wheeler Mission Ministries considers every position one of ministry and a vital and valued part of our team. Job Title: Volunteer Engagement Manager

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt  

Reports to:  Director of Community Engagement & Services

Position Summary:

The Volunteer Engagement Manager oversees volunteer involvement at Wheeler Mission-Bloomington by recruiting, scheduling, selecting, screening, building relationships, and communicating with volunteers, staff, and donors. This position collaborates with staff to ensure volunteers are properly equipped and integrated into their onsite positions. This position provides support to advance Wheeler Mission-Bloomington’s strategic priorities and strengthen the effectiveness of ministry operations

This is a part-time, 24-hour per week position. Occasional evening or weekend is required as job duties demand. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and some holidays and weekends.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Brief description of duties in order of priority

Key Area: Volunteer Engagement Management

  • Recruits, selects, and schedules individual and group volunteers for Wheeler Mission-Bloomington.
  • Manages High Impact volunteer program, including recruitment, selection, equipping, development, and leadership.
  • Oversees volunteer-driven Medical, Dental, & Legal Clinics.
  • Collaborates with Team members to ensure proper communication and placement of volunteers.
  • Builds relationships with regular volunteers, aiming for retention and commitment to Wheeler Mission.
  • Greets and orients volunteers, especially at their first service date.

Key Area: Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborates with WM staff, Directors, and Volunteer Supervisors for volunteer development and placement.
  • Maintains open communication with staff to determine needs, create position descriptions, integrate volunteer volunteers, and resolve/prevent issues.
  • Represents Wheeler Mission to prospective community groups through speaking engagements, volunteer fairs, tours, and interviews.
  • Works on transitioning episodic volunteers into regular volunteers and financial donors.
  • Attends Development and other necessary staff meetings & trainings.
  • Assists in organizing Volunteer Appreciation and leads volunteers in other ministry special events.
  • Assists the Director with special projects and administrative responsibilities that strengthen strategic priorities at Wheeler Mission—Bloomington.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position has no direct staff supervisory responsibilities but will oversee all volunteer activities at Wheeler Mission-Bloomington.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, People and/or Project Management or a combination of education, training, and/or experience
  • Exceptional communication skills.

Technical/Software Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

To perform the essential job functions of this position, a candidate must be capable of performing many physical functions including: 

  • Work in an office setting but will have regular opportunities for tours, speaking engagements, off-site meetings, and special events.
  • The occasional need to set up and facilitate work projects, give tours using the stairwell, lifting boxes, tables, chairs, and other items up to 20 pounds.

Other Requirements for Employment

  • Must possess a valid state issued driver’s license and have a driving record without major moving violations, including convictions for DUI, Reckless Driving, or Driving While Suspended. Must be insurable according to standards established by Wheeler Mission’s risk management insurance agency.
