Iseries information

What is an iSeries professional?

iSeries professionals are IT specialists who work with IBM's iSeries (now IBM Power Systems) servers, which run the IBM i operating system. Their responsibilities typically include system administration, application development, maintenance, troubleshooting, and support for business applications running on these platforms. iSeries professionals may also handle upgrades, security, backups, and integration with other systems. They often use languages like RPG, COBOL, and CL to develop and maintain applications. Their expertise ensures that critical business operations on the iSeries platform run smoothly and efficiently.

What are jobs that use iSeries?

iSeries jobs involve working with servers that IBM has designed for small and mid-size businesses and departments within larger companies. An iSeries developer and engineer work to create, develop, and configure software and applications for use on iSeries servers. As an iSeries systems administrator, you also have configuration duties, and you monitor the server to ensure maximum uptime. Your responsibilities may also involve confirming the proper backup of data and handling the migration of data from other servers and databases. An iSeries security engineer ensures that the servers remain secure, monitors access, and responds to security breaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IBM iSeries (AS/400) developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IBM iSeries (AS/400) Developer, you need strong expertise in RPG, COBOL, CL programming, and a solid understanding of the IBM i platform, typically supported by relevant IT degrees or certifications. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer for i, DB2 database management systems, and experience with legacy modernization tools are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These competencies ensure reliable business operations, efficient system maintenance, and successful modernization of critical enterprise applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in an iSeries (AS/400) environment, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working with iSeries (AS/400) systems often face challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern technologies, maintaining and upgrading aging hardware, and finding up-to-date documentation or skilled colleagues. Addressing these challenges typically involves continuous learning, leveraging specialized forums or communities, and collaborating closely with both IT and business teams to ensure smooth operations and modernization efforts. Additionally, many organizations invest in training and encourage knowledge sharing to bridge skill gaps within their iSeries teams.
