Is Engineer information

What is an IS engineer?

An IS Engineer, or Information Systems Engineer, is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining an organization’s information systems. They ensure that computer systems, networks, and software applications meet an organization’s needs and run efficiently. IS Engineers often work on system upgrades, cybersecurity, troubleshooting, and integrating new technologies to support business operations. Their role is crucial for maintaining data integrity, system security, and overall IT infrastructure reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IS Engineer, you need a solid background in information systems, network architecture, and security protocols, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+ is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure robust system security, smooth operations, and the ability to address complex technical challenges efficiently.

What are some typical challenges faced by engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Engineers frequently collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds, such as product managers, designers, and quality assurance specialists. One common challenge is aligning technical solutions with business objectives while communicating complex engineering concepts in accessible terms. Additionally, engineers may need to balance competing priorities and timelines, requiring flexibility and strong problem-solving skills. Effective teamwork and open communication are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring project success.

What is the difference between Is Engineer vs Mechanical Technician?

AspectEngineerMechanical Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, professional licensure often preferredAssociate degree or diploma in mechanical technology, certifications may be beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, project management, often office-based with site visitsHands-on mechanical work, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting in industrial or manufacturing settings
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, construction, technology sectorsManufacturing plants, maintenance companies, industrial facilities

In summary, engineers focus on designing and planning mechanical systems, requiring higher education and licensure, while mechanical technicians handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, often with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in the mechanical industry but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What are the 4 types of engineers?

Engineers are typically categorized into four main types: civil engineers who design infrastructure like bridges and roads; mechanical engineers who work on machinery and mechanical systems; electrical engineers who develop electrical and electronic devices; and software engineers who create computer programs and applications. Each type requires specialized skills, tools, and certifications relevant to their field.

Are you passionate about Structural Engineering?

Do you enjoy collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to bring designs to life?

Keep reading - this might be the role for you!

We're currently looking for an INTERMEDIATE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER to join our Kingston team.

What does working at the Kingston location mean?

  • Contact with the Barrie office will largely be virtual except for initial onboarding, periodic visits to Barrie for company events, and if otherwise decided on as a Team.
  • You're an independent worker (you'll be the solo Structural team member in Kingston), though this does not mean unsupported! There is daily contact with the Barrie team via Teams, email, phone, as you need and inclusion in meetings and team conversations.

What will you be doing in this role?

  • Lead the successful planning, execution, and completion of structural engineering projects for our clients - with a strong focus on quality, cost-effective delivery, safety, and compliance.
  • Act as Project Manager on single-discipline projects, keeping them on time and on budget.
  • Coordinate with Gerrits' Project Management team on multi-disciplinary projects to keep things moving forward as planned.
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, training, and mentorship to our team.
  • Write proposals and reports, review designs, and coordinate with vendors and clients.
  • Using your extensive knowledge of building codes and structural standards: OBC Part 4, CSA A23.3, CSA S16, CSA S136, CSA O86

What will help you succeed in this role?

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
  • P.Eng. designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • 4+ years of experience in an Engineering role.
  • Comfortable with field work - construction sites, contractors, and building relationships in the Kingston area are a regular part of this role.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and structural analysis software (e.g., SAFI GSE, S-Frame, SPSlab, MASS, Woodworks); basic coding experience is a plus.
  • Strong, client-focused work ethic, and entrepreneurial approach.
  • A collaborative mindset - you speak up, share your perspective, and aren't afraid to respectfully challenge the team when you see a better way.

What we offer:

  • Work alongside Professional Engineers, Engineering Interns, Designers, Drafters, and more.
  • A 37.5-hour work week.
  • Hybrid work environment.
  • A salary that reflects your experience and qualifications (see Compensation below).
  • A comprehensive Total Rewards package, including Canada Life benefits, a MyHSA spending account, and an optional GRSP/DPSP program.
  • Opportunities to get involved in charitable initiatives throughout the year.
  • Ongoing support for your professional development and growth.

Founded in 2006, Gerrits is a multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm built on a team that genuinely enjoys working together. Everything we do is guided by our Mission, Vision, and Core Values - Genuine, Engaged, Leadership - and our relaxed, supportive office environment gives everyone room to thrive, both personally and professionally.
