The Impact You'll Make in this Role
As a Product Development Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
  • Develop and maintain cross-platform mobile applications (iOS and Android) providing asset-tracking and live dashboards for smart sensor and automated products.
  • Develop, deploy and support cloud-hosted services and interfaces across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), including container-hosted applications on Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS.
  • Design, develop and maintain web applications, portals and RESTful backend services supporting connected products and cloud platforms.
  • Implement end-to-end security for web services and APIs, including transport-layer security (HTTPS/TLS), AES encryption, key management and secure data handling in transit and at rest.
  • Support and enhance quality-inspection web interfaces for capturing and managing inspection images, recipes, and logs.
  • Build and maintain IoT connectivity between mobile/web applications and embedded devices (e.g., BLE-connected locators and transmitters).
  • Develop and integrate AI-assisted interfaces, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and other LLM-based services.
  • Design and maintain data storage, APIs and integration layers connecting devices, applications and cloud back-ends.
  • Collaborate closely with firmware, hardware, data-science and product teams, and coordinate with external development partners, to deliver reliable end-to-end solutions.
  • Support software architecture, integration, testing, deployment, and CI/CD across mobile, web and cloud environments.
  • Communicate technical results and program status to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive the development and commercialization of connected products and digital services that

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience developing and deploying full-stack and mobile applications, including front-end, back-end, and APIs for iOS and/or Android.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience in modern programming languages such as Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Swift, Kotlin, Python, or C#.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience with RESTful APIs, cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure, and modern software development tools including GitHub and CI/CD.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
  • Master's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related discipline and from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with the Angular framework and modern front-end development (TypeScript, HTML/CSS).
  • Experience with Java and the Spring Boot framework for backend service development.
  • Experience with native mobile development (Swift for iOS, Kotlin/Java for Android) and app-store release/deployment.
  • Hands-on experience across both AWS and Microsoft Azure cloud ecosystems.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS).
  • Experience integrating AI/ML or LLM services, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases and pipeline/prompt design.
  • Experience with IoT and device connectivity, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and cloud device/data ingestion.
  • Experience designing relational and/or NoSQL databases and data modeling.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code and DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with authentication/authorization and application-security best practices (OAuth2, OIDC).
  • Ability to work effectively across a broad technology stack and to coordinate with external development resources.

  • Work location: This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Austin, TX.
  • Travel: May include up to 15% domestic or international
