About this RoleThe Impact-First Investments Officer is a member of the Finance team, reporting to the Senior Vice President of Investments. This position plays a key role in implementing California Community Foundationโs impact-first investment strategy by managing the sourcing, evaluation, execution, and ongoing administration of impact-first investments. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, Impact Team staff, external investment consultants, legal counsel, and prospective investees, this position exercises independent judgment in executing complex transactions, developing investment recommendations, identifying risks, and managing investments throughout their lifecycle. The role involves recommending process improvements and serving as a subject matter resource on the Foundationโs Impact-First investment program. The position combines project management, investment operations, relationship management, and administrative oversight to ensure investments are executed efficiently, appropriately documented, and effectively monitored after closing. The Impact-First Investments Officer serves as the primary internal resource for questions related to the Foundationโs impact-first investment portfolio and processes.
Responsibilities- Serve as the primary point of contact for organizations seeking impact-first investments, directing intake and preliminary review of direct loans, loan guarantees, loan fund participations, and direct equity or venture capital investments
- Maintain the investment pipeline, tracking opportunities from initial inquiry through closing and ensuring they are routed through established review and approval processes
- Partner with the Impact Team and the Foundationโs investment consultant to evaluate strategic alignment, financial feasibility, risk, and proposed investment structures
- Oversee due diligence materials and checklists, and prepare or direct the preparation of investment memoranda, summaries, and Investment Committee materials
- Serve as project manager for investments throughout due diligence, developing transaction timelines and facilitating discussions among borrowers, consultants, legal counsel, and Foundation staff to advance deals
- Oversee investment and loan documentation, closing requirements, and the funding process for approved investments, liaising with Finance and other internal departments
- Monitor portfolio performance, maintain accurate records, and manage invoicing, repayment schedules, and covenant reporting for the impact-first investment portfolio
- Evaluate amendment, waiver, or restructuring requests and develop recommendations for senior leadership
- Attend Investment Committee meetings, oversee logistics and minutes, and independently track and implement follow-up actions
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for borrowers, investees, and prospective applicants, and as the internal resource for colleagues on impact-first investments
- Prepare periodic reports on pipeline activity and portfolio performance, and support policy, process, and workflow improvements for the impact-first investment program
- Bachelorโs degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Public Policy, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in community development finance, impact investing, program related investing, commercial lending, nonprofit finance, investment operations, philanthropy, or a related field
- Experience managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders, with strong organizational and project management skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple transactions simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Experience working with investment documentation, loan agreements, or legal documents
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word; experience with Workday a plus
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a systems-thinking approach to finding solutions from multiple data points
- Intellectual curiosity and initiative, proactively seeking out solutions and applying innovative, community-centered approaches to challenges
- Ability to facilitate meetings and group processes for fact-finding, decision-making, peer learning, and problem solving
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise analyses and narratives, and to comfortably present to diverse audiences including donors, Board members, and nonprofit and community groups
- Ability to make well-reasoned decisions in the organizationโs best interest, working collaboratively and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds
- Strong computer proficiency, including mastery of the Microsoft Office suite and familiarity with database software, with a willingness to learn new tools and systems
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to implement and manage multiple projects and adjust to shifting demands
- Demonstrated ability to implement, conduct, monitor, and evaluate initiatives involving numerous partners
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and following tasks through to completion
- Genuine commitment to confidentiality, sensitivity, and connecting the Foundationโs resources to community impact
