Job description

This job is onsite in California at our Humboldt County timberlands.

Who you are:You appreciate a combination of field and office work. In your personal life you enjoy outdoor excursions whether it be backpacking, hiking, hunting, skiing, etc. You tend to have a penchant for numbers: thinking in ratios, distributions or how a series of measurements would look graphically. You have a positive attitude, good work ethic, aptitude to learn new skills, and are relaxed navigating in the forest by yourself. You may have a 2- or 4-year college degree in forestry or a related field in Natural Resources with experience in timber cruising, vegetation surveys, ArcMap, and remote sensing technologies.

What the job is: The Inventory Forester plays a key role in maintaining the forest inventory information that supports sustainable forest management across Green Diamond's California timberlands. This position combines fieldwork, data analysis, mapping, and technology to collect, evaluate, and maintain information about forest growth, composition, and condition. Responsibilities include designing and implementing timber cruises, utilizing GIS and remote sensing technologies, reviewing inventory data, and collaborating with forestry professionals to ensure accurate and reliable inventory information is used for management decisions.

Listed are examples of the work this role performs:

  • Conducts timber cruises using variable and fixed plot methods.
  • Stand delineation using aerial photographs, drone-acquired imagery along with LiDAR and other remote sensing technologies.
  • Update stand typing and harvest history information using GIS software.
  • Conduct stand and road access reconnaissance.
  • Prepare accurate maps and supporting materials.
  • Trains others on timber cruising protocols and methods.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments, forestry consultants, and and contractor personnel.

If there are aspects of this job that would be new for you, we will help you learn and expand your knowledge. You will be working with employees in other departments at Green Diamond as well as contracted employees.

What the department is like: The Planning and Inventory team supports long-term forest management by maintaining reliable information about forest conditions, growth, and composition. Our team is collaborative and encourages questions, new ideas, and continuous learning. We support one another's professional growth and work closely with colleagues across departments to help achieve Green Diamond's long-term forest management objectives.

Where you'll work:You will work at our offices located in Humboldt County in Korbel which is along the northern California coast. Our offices are nestled in the forest where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean.

Compensation Details: Hourly wage range with progression levels: $23.00 to $30.20. The pay range listed is just one part of Green Diamond's total compensation package. Other rewards include eligibility to receive an annual company-wide financial bonus and the opportunity to receive a bonus based on your personal performance.

In addition, Green Diamond offers a generous benefit package to include medical/vision and dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan with match and profit sharing. Paid time off includes 9 designated and up to 2 personal holidays, 10 vacation days, 10 sick days, 30 days parental leave, 3 days bereavement, an extra 2 days bereavement unpaid, jury duty, 1 volunteer day, and 5 days family care. Also provided is a company vehicle for business use. More information about benefits can be viewed on our website: www.greendiamond.com/people/career-opportunities

We're a sixth-generation family-owned company that is guided by our values of environmental stewardship, sustainable forestry, and supporting our local communities. Our history spans more than 130 years and our commitment is to do what is right, even when it is the harder path to follow.
