  • Develop sales, margin, receipt, and inventory forecasts using trend analysis and predictive modeling.
  • Develop open-to-buy (OTB) and ensure alignment with company financial targets and merchandising strategy.
  • Drive category profitability through mix optimization, pricing strategy, and proactive markdown planning.
  • Lead weekly business reviews, delivering clear and actionable insights and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders.

Strategic Partnership with Buying

The Senior Retail Planner is the Buyer's financial conscience, ensuring that every assortment decision is grounded in data, aligned with business targets, and positioned to serve the customer.

  • Provide data-driven insights to guide assortment strategy, SKU introductions, and exits.
  • Collaborate on assortment reviews to identify category gaps, white space opportunities, and emerging trends.
  • Influence vendor negotiations by providing volume forecasts, sell-through expectations, and margin targets.
  • Align on product lifecycle strategy, including launch quantities, replenishment cadence, and end-of-life planning.
  • Ensure the assortment reflects regional demand, store clustering, and customer demographics.

Allocation & Replenishment

  • Develop and manage allocation strategies for new items, core assortment, and promotional programs.
  • Build A/B/C store tiering models based on sales velocity, customer demographics, and store format.
  • Maintain replenishment logic to support high in-stock rates without over-inventorying locations.
  • Monitor store-level sell-through and adjust allocations dynamically in response to business performance.
  • Identify underperforming stores and recommend corrective actions, including inventory rebalancing and SKU rationalization.
  • Partner with retail operations to develop, refine, and implement inventory management processes as needed.

Inventory Management & Productivity

  • Maintain optimal inventory levels across distribution centers and store locations.
  • Monitor aged inventory, slow-moving SKUs, and at-risk items; recommend markdowns or reallocation strategies to the Buyer.
  • Proactively develop inventory health scorecards and action plans to mitigate risk and protect margin.

Reporting, Analytics & Insights

  • Conduct post-mortems on promotions, product launches, and seasonal programs, translating learnings into forward-looking recommendations.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Partner with the Buyer in weekly performance meetings to surface opportunities and optimize revenue.
Qualifications
  • 5–8+ years of experience in retail planning, allocation, or merchandise strategy.
  • Experience in high-SKU, high-velocity retail categories (CPG, convenience, accessories, or adjacent channels).
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with retail planning systems preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen and fluency in retail math, including OTB, margin, turn, and sell-through.
