Major Responsibilities:
Direct Patient Care - Intraoperative Monitoring
- Performs intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring which may include:Electromyography (EMG) and Triggered Electromyography; Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP); Direct Cortical Stimulation (DCS); Electroencephalography (EEG); Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP); Transcranial Motor Evoked Potentials (TcMEP); Facial Nerve Monitoring; Electrocorticography (ECoG); Topographic Brain Mappingbased on site specific needs
- Provides real-time waveform descriptions and alerts over-site physicians, surgeons and anesthesiologists to changes in waveform data.
- Delivers technical interpretation and documentation for each procedure with minimal supervision.
- Maintains accurate records and reviews patient history to optimize monitoring procedures.
- Ensures personalized, patient-centered service in all interactions.
Training and Education
- Participation in training and education programs for departmental staff
- Provides one-on-one teaching, supervision, and on-the-job demonstrations for trainee-level staff.
- Educates patients and families on procedures, ensuring age-appropriate and developmentally suitable communication.
Departmental Quality Activities
- Assists in billing for IOM services and reporting case studies to support program growth.
- Assists in developing clinical guidelines, outcome measures, credentialing, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Contributes to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives, including data gathering and process enhancement.
Technical Resource Activities
- Serves as a technical resource for clinicians and staff regarding electro-neurophysiologic procedures.
- Completes special projects efficiently as assigned.
Communication and Teamwork
- Works and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, including neurophysiologists and remote neurologists, for real-time oversight.
- Assesses technical skills of teammates during training and assists in determining their readiness for IOM procedures.
- Fosters strong relationships with OR staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other team members.
- Contributes to program proposals and evaluations of new test procedures and equipment.
- Engages in co-worker feedback programs, providing and accepting constructive feedback.
- Resolves patient care issues proactively, escalating unresolved matters to appropriate sources.
Scheduling
- Assists in coordinating IOM procedure scheduling across departments, physician offices, and operating rooms, ensuring availability of equipment and supplies.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- ABRET Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) must be held or obtained within 18 months from date of hire.
Education Required:
- High School Graduate.
Experience Required:
- A minimum of one year experience performing intraoperative monitoring procedures in an OR environment and a minimum of 3 years' experience in routine END procedures preferred.Relevant experience within neurodiagnostic field can be substituted for OR environment experience and can be evaluated on an individual basis at the discretion of department director and physician leader.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.
- Intermediate computer skills.
- Expertise in performing intraoperative monitoring in high-risk, fast-paced operating room environments using advanced systems like Cadwell studio
- Knowledgeable of sterile field technique and operating room infection prevention standards
- Proficient in computer skills related to neurophysiologic monitoring and documentation.
- Ability to provide technical interpretation and clinical correlation of procedure results.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to CQI processes and program development.
- Commitment to teamwork and patient-centered care.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Must sit, stand, lift, twist, and walk throughout the workday across hospital units, including Operating Rooms (OR), Interventional Radiology (IR), and Ambulatory Surgical Environments (ASE).
Must be able to:
- Lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient handling equipment for lifts over 35 pounds or when patients cannot assist, with support from another associate.
- Unique patient lifting/movement situations assessed case-by-case.
- Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
- Work environment may contain potential for exposure to blood and body fluids or other unpleasant fumes or hazards and, therefore, must have ability to work in that type of environment and wear protective clothing as necessary.
- Potential exposure to life-threatening diseases and hazardous materials.
- Exposure to sharp instruments (EMG needles).
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Exposed to normal office environment.
- Ability to work with diverse patient populations, including all age groups and those with disabilities.
- Flexible schedule with extended hours, including 24-hour on-call rotation and occasional weekend shifts
