Interpretive Design information

What is interpretive design?

Interpretive design is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on creating engaging and educational experiences for visitors in museums, parks, heritage sites, and other public spaces. It combines elements of graphic design, architecture, storytelling, and education to communicate information in a way that is accessible and meaningful to diverse audiences. The goal of interpretive design is to connect people with places, stories, and concepts by making complex information understandable and memorable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interpretive Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interpretive Designer, you need expertise in visual communication, storytelling, and spatial design, often supported by a degree in graphic design, museum studies, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling tools, and knowledge of exhibition planning systems is typically required. Strong collaboration, creativity, and the ability to engage diverse audiences are essential soft skills in this field. These skills are crucial for creating meaningful, educational, and accessible experiences that effectively convey information and connect with the public.

What is the difference between Interpretive Design vs Exhibit Designer?

AspectInterpretive DesignExhibit Designer
CredentialsTypically requires degrees in design, communication, or related fields; certifications in interpretive planning are commonRequires degrees in design, fine arts, or architecture; often holds certifications in exhibit fabrication
Work EnvironmentWorks primarily in museums, parks, and cultural sites focusing on educational storytellingWorks in museums, galleries, and trade shows focusing on visual and spatial design
Industry UsageUsed in cultural, educational, and natural resource sectorsUsed mainly in museums, galleries, and exhibition spaces

Interpretive Design and Exhibit Designer roles overlap in creating engaging displays, but interpretive designers focus more on educational storytelling and visitor experience, while exhibit designers emphasize visual aesthetics and spatial planning. Both roles require design skills and industry knowledge, but interpretive design leans more toward communication and education strategies.

How does an Interpretive Designer typically collaborate with subject matter experts and other stakeholders during a project?

In an Interpretive Design role, collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), curators, educators, and clients is central to creating meaningful visitor experiences. Interpretive Designers often facilitate workshops, conduct interviews, and participate in review meetings to ensure the content is accurate and engaging. They translate complex information from SMEs into accessible, audience-focused displays or installations, working closely with graphic designers, fabricators, and project managers to bring concepts to life. This teamwork is essential for balancing creativity, educational goals, and project constraints, making communication and adaptability key skills in the role.

Job description

HIRING NOW!

Be part of history in the making. We’re hiring now for our Grand Opening team at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Apply today to start work at the end of May!

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” -Theodore Roosevelt

Since 2014, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) has been planning and building a new, ambitious kind of presidential library and museum. Other presidential libraries tell the story of a single individual, but the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) – being built more than a century after T.R.’s death – will do more than preserve history. The TRPL will be a people’s library, bringing Roosevelt’s values and relentless spirit to life at a critical time in our nation and world, while simultaneously championing the stories of all who “dare greatly, think boldly, care deeply, and live passionately.”

The library is currently being constructed in Medora, North Dakota, with a milestone planned for July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th anniversary. Participants at the TRPL will learn from – not just about – Roosevelt’s story, being transformed into the same stunning Badlands that served as the fulcrum in T.R.’s incredible life story.

Guided by the pillar principles of leadership, citizenship, and conservation, the Foundation has partnered with innovative partners – like the award-winning architecture firm, Snøhetta, and the best-in-class story crafters, the Future of Storytelling – to build an institution like no other. With plans to be the most sustainable presidential library and campus ever, a revolutionary approach to interpretive design, and programming that will spread the library’s message into neighboring Theodore Roosevelt National Park and beyond across the globe, the opportunity to join a talented team in building and opening this institution is truly unique.
