What is an internship in architecture?

Internships in architecture are temporary positions that allow students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in an architectural firm or related organization. These internships provide hands-on learning opportunities, exposure to real-world projects, and mentorship from experienced architects. Interns typically assist with tasks such as drafting, model making, site visits, and research, helping them to develop essential skills for their future careers. Completing an internship is often a requirement for professional licensure and can significantly improve job prospects after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an architecture internship?

Architecture interns typically work on a range of tasks including assisting with drafting designs, creating 3D models, conducting site visits, and helping with project presentations. You may also support senior architects with research, material selection, and client meetings. The scope of your responsibilities will depend on the size and focus of the firm, but most internships offer exposure to real-world projects and collaborative teamwork, providing valuable hands-on experience for your future career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an architecture internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Architecture Internship, you need a foundational knowledge of architectural design, drafting, and building codes, often supported by ongoing study in an accredited architecture program. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication help interns stand out in collaborative studio environments. These skills and qualities are crucial as they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to project work, learn from experienced professionals, and prepare for a successful architectural career.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an internship in architecture, candidates should build a strong portfolio showcasing their design skills, gain relevant experience through coursework or related work, and apply to firms or programs that offer internship opportunities. Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD or Revit and understanding of architectural principles are often required. Networking and reaching out directly to firms can also improve chances of securing an internship.

What are the types of internships in architecture?

Internships in architecture can be categorized as paid or unpaid, and may include design internships, technical internships, or research internships. They often vary in duration from summer programs to year-round positions and may require proficiency in design software like AutoCAD or Revit. These internships provide practical experience in architectural design, drafting, project management, and construction documentation.

Can you intern as an architect?

Job description

Yellowstone Landscape is dedicated to excellence in commercial landscaping.  As the largest privately-owned commercial landscaping company in the nation, we offer exciting career opportunities for Landscape Professionals across the United States.  To learn more, please visit our website: www.yellowstonelandscape.com.

Our growing company is seeking college students and recent college grads to join our Internship Program.  The Yellowstone Landscape Internship Program provides students with an array of experiences in the landscape industry including construction, management, tree care, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, plant identification and crew management.  We can accommodate interns at most branch locations.  This is a full-time, paid position.

Responsibilities

We've designed this program with you in mind. You'll be exposed to different aspects of the landscape industry, with a focus on landscape maintenance and installation.  The tree care internship focuses on tree health, pruning practices, removal and business management.

A rotating schedule and learning objectives are clearly defined before you begin, allowing the Branch Manager, Intern Mentor and you to develop a program that best suits your interests and the needs of the branch.

You will be paired with an Account Manager (mentor) who will act as your primary supervisor and be someone you can go to with questions or concerns. Your mentor will share their management philosophy and help you develop your own management style. They'll always be there to provide feedback throughout the program.

Professional development is an important component of the internship program, and we offer outside activities and networking opportunities to enhance a student's exposure to the horticultural environment. We also offer a speaker's forum, covering topics relevant to the company and your professional development.

Requirements

  • Major in Plant Science, Horticultural Sciences, Agriculture, Landscape Management, Urban Forestry, Agricultural Mechanization, Construction, Design or Architecture, or Business.
  • Interest in learning all aspects of the landscape industry.
  • Can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Strong communication skills.

Compensation
We offer a competitive hourly wage and monthly housing stipend for eligible students because we remember what it's like to be in college and trying to save money!
