What is an internship?

An Internship is a position within your desired field that pays little or no money but offers you the opportunity to gain real-world experience. This may set you apart for your future job search. Generally, Internships are almost expected by employers on an entry-level candidate’s resume. You are much more of an asset to an employer if you have some work experience.

What is an internship?

An internship is a temporary work experience program offered by employers to students or recent graduates. It provides hands-on training and exposure to a professional environment, allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. Internships can be paid or unpaid and typically last from a few weeks to several months. They are valuable for building skills, gaining industry experience, and making professional connections.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship?

As an intern, you'll typically be assigned a variety of tasks that help you gain hands-on experience in your field of study. These might include assisting with ongoing projects, conducting research, supporting administrative tasks, and participating in team meetings. Interns often collaborate with experienced professionals who provide mentorship and guidance, and you'll have opportunities to contribute your ideas. The specific responsibilities will vary by company and industry, but the goal is to give you practical exposure and a better understanding of the workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of your field of study, a strong academic background, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with industry-standard software, basic research tools, or office productivity suites like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is often expected. Initiative, adaptability, strong communication, and teamwork are the soft skills that help an intern stand out. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully, absorb new knowledge quickly, and integrate effectively into professional environments.

Do interns get paid well?

Interns' pay varies depending on the industry, company, and location. Some internships are paid hourly or stipends, often aligned with minimum wage or slightly above, while others may be unpaid, especially in non-profit or competitive fields. Paid internships typically offer more competitive compensation for the skills and work performed during the program.

Job description

This internship offers the opportunity to help conduct field research in Reykjavik Iceland with one of our research teams. This expedition will focus on developing two publications:

  • Develop the first hiking trails magazine with short stories capturing the culture and environment of Iceland.
  • A naturalist guide and cultural guide website/web-app to Reykjavik and south Iceland.

The ultimate goal of the publications is to provide travelers with insight into the culture and environment they will be traveling through. Information we will be capturing will include Icelandic culture, history, geography, geology, wildlife, natural resources, economy, health care, religion, tourism impacts and more.

Interns will complete pre-trip investigative research, conduct action research for 1 week in Iceland, and spend 2 months wrapping up their research from their home or university during the summer or fall semester.

"If you want to stand out from the crowd, give people a reason not to forget you.” - Richard Branson.

  • We are currently looking for interns with a positive attitude and a desire to explore and learn about other cultures.
