Internship Wire Harness Design Engineer information

What does an internship wire harness design engineer do?

An Internship Wire Harness Design Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing electrical wire harnesses used in vehicles or machinery. Their responsibilities often include creating wiring diagrams, collaborating with other engineering teams, selecting components, and ensuring that harnesses meet safety and industry standards. Interns may also use CAD software to create models and help with prototype builds. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the electrical aspects of product development.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an internship wire harness design engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Wire Harness Design Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a range of hands-on projects, such as creating wiring diagrams, assisting with 3D routing of harnesses in CAD software, and supporting prototype builds. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers, manufacturing teams, and quality control to ensure harness designs meet technical specifications and compliance standards. You'll also have opportunities to learn industry-specific tools and standards, and gain insight into the end-to-end process from design to production, which can be valuable for career growth in the automotive or aerospace sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship wire harness design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Wire Harness Design Engineer, you typically need a foundation in electrical engineering principles, familiarity with schematics, and coursework or experience related to wiring systems. Proficiency with CAD tools like CATIA or AutoCAD Electrical and an understanding of relevant industry standards (such as IPC/WHMA-A-620) are often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help interns excel when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate, safe, and efficient wire harness designs that meet technical and safety requirements in engineering projects.

What is the difference between Internship Wire Harness Design Engineer vs Wire Harness Design Engineer?

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

McCarthy is seeking a Design Engineer to support the successful delivery of utility-scale renewable energy projects, including photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities. This role coordinates design activities across internal project teams, engineers of record (EORs), owners, vendors, and subcontractors to help deliver coordinated designs that meet project requirements for safety, quality, cost, schedule, constructability, and execution.

The Design Engineer will support multiple projects and assigned design scopes while developing expertise in renewable energy design, design-build/EPC delivery, project coordination, and construction-focused design management. The role is well suited for a collaborative, organized engineer who is comfortable managing details, facilitating communication, identifying issues early, and driving action to closure.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design Coordination and Document Control

  • Support the Design Manager and Pursuit Leadership team in coordinating design activities across approximately four to five projects and leading assigned design scopes.
  • Coordinate design submittals, requests for information (RFIs), document control, action-item logs, comment logs, and trend logs.
  • Review assigned drawings, specifications, EPC exhibits, and Basis of Design documents for alignment with project requirements.
  • Identify conflicts, gaps, constructability concerns, and potential value-engineering opportunities; elevate issues and support resolution.
  • Coordinate with civil, electrical, structural, SCADA, tracker, fiber, and other design disciplines to maintain alignment across scope packages.
  • Schedule and support internal, external, and owner design-review meetings; prepare agendas, document decisions, and track commitments through closure.

Pursuit and Preconstruction Support

  • Review RFP documents and help identify design requirements, non-standard conditions, assumptions, and potential risks.
  • Support development of Basis of Design documentation, EOR scope sheets, bid documents, and design packaging strategies.
  • Collect and review EOR redlines, qualifications, proposals, and scope clarifications.
  • Assist with EOR scope reviews, proposal evaluation, value analysis, and descope activities.
  • Support the development of design-related contract exhibits and routing documentation under the direction of the Design Manager.
  • Coordinate with pursuit, preconstruction, estimating, procurement, operations, and engineering partners to maintain alignment with project strategy, budget, schedule, and margin objectives.

Project Execution and Field Connection

  • Support design coordination during preconstruction, design, construction, commissioning, and project closeout as assigned.
  • Participate in site visits to strengthen relationships, increase construction awareness, and identify design implications for field execution.
  • Assist project teams with design challenges and changes, including coordination of technical questions with the appropriate subject-matter experts.
  • Develop an understanding of how design changes affect cost, schedule, energy production, safety, quality, risk, and constructability.
  • Promote designing-for-safety practices and help ensure McCarthy standards are used and improved when appropriate.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

  • Build effective working relationships with project teams, EORs, owners, vendors, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Facilitate productive communication and help teams reach timely, practical design solutions.
  • Maintain a process-oriented approach to planning, organization, follow-through, and accountability.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement initiatives, lessons-learned activities, and the development of design standards and tools.
  • Share knowledge with peers and support the development of Design Interns and newer Design Engineers as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate McCarthy’s core values and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, Smart and Healthy workplace culture.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience coordinating engineering, design, construction, or project-delivery activities.
  • Ability to read and review engineering drawings, specifications, and other technical project documents.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and partner locations as needed.

McCarthy is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, including disability and protected veteran status.
