High School InternshipThe Opportunity:Internships at Idaho National Laboratory IdahoNational Laboratory (INL) hosts a limited number of high school students eachyear to support INL's mission. Opportunitiesfor interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and includenon-scientific positions in various operations and business disciplines.

TheDeliverables:Interns will spend the first week of their assignmentworking with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resourcesfor a successful internship. For thenext several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance andguidance to the intern. In addition toregular activities, interns are invited to attend weekly seminars, tours andcommunity events designed with career development in mind. Completion of a final project is highlyrecommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditionalposter, electronic presentation or video.
The Process:Through this single application, you are considered for all highschool internship projects related to INL. Simply complete the applicationquestions. It is common for applicants to receive consideration for multipleprojects at varying times throughout the process. Mentors will make direct contactwith applicants who meet their project qualifications to share the specificdetails of the project. Most summer high school internships provide flexibilitywith start and end dates to account for summer vacation plans. We encourage early application to increasethe number of opportunities available to you.
The Projects:INL high school interns work directly with INL employees on multipleprojects. Examples of previous high school internship projects are below:
- SupportNational User Facility Project and Process Demonstration Unit (PDU) datacollection and analysis. This willinvolve sample and data collection, data evaluation and interpretation, dataand sample management, and presentation of results. Most of the work will be done in excel. As part of the sample analysis, the internwill perform moisture, density, and particle size analysis.
- Assistwith the operation of the INL High Performance Computing systems. Work willinvolve computer programming, scripting, web development, and theimplementation of tools to aid in system management.
- Defineand develop a web-page for the Research Library. This would include workingwith the library staff, the mission orgs, and college interns to understand howresearch is conducted and understand what needs they have to conduct research.Additionally, there is an opportunity to help in the library in developing aprocess map of the applications and tools available at the library.
- Scanand document isotope releases from stack monitoring reports from the MaterialsFuel Complex (MFC). These will becorrelated with fuels and test samples undergoing examination in thesefacilities to see if there are correlations with dissolution, pin puncturingand sampling. The student will learn themathematics of correlations and advanced data analysis and presentation.
- Dataanalysis of system events to provide resiliency metrics, predictive analytics,and health assessment of cyber security systems at the Idaho NationalLaboratory. This position will includeopportunities to conduct and analyze cyber security investigations and incidentresponse processes. The final capstonedeliverable of the position will be to have an executive level dashboard ofcyber significant activities that will be available in real time to keystakeholders of Cyber Security at the Idaho National Laboratory.
Required Qualifications:All InternshipCandidates Must: - Have the ability to pass a background check
- Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Complete this application, which is used to place students based on their academic interests, coursework, knowledge and communication skills
- Enrolled full time student status at an accredited high school program
- Preference will be provided to local high school students
- Preference will be provided to graduating high school seniors, junior complete and students heading into their junior year of high school
- Must be 16 years of age
