POSITION OVERVIEW:
Interns in the Outreach and Community Engagement department handle a wide range of assignments, including writing, webinar tech support, event coordination, content development, data compilation, marketing, and web research - all designed to support engagement around local and national productions in the D.C metropolitan area. Interns occasionally work directly with families and children in settings such as schools, libraries, and childcare centers.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Collaborate with the Outreach & Engagement team to support events and educational workshops, providing onsite and virtual assistance with logistics, registration, marketing, and follow-up material distribution.
• Contribute to the development of content for the monthly newsletter.
• Conduct web research on assigned tasks.
• Develop and maintain community databases.
• Gather and process data collected from events and educational workshops using surveys, informal assessments, and anecdotal notes.
EDUCATION:
Preferred Major: English, Communications, Journalism, Social Work, Education
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• The process of outreach and engagement, from conceptualizing an idea to pitching it to stakeholders to executing the project.
• Expand knowledge and skills to develop and strengthen partnerships with local organizations, such as neighborhood groups, special interest groups, government, libraries, etc.
• A strong understanding of public media, potential careers and more specifically how local WETA differentiates itself from national WETA.
DESIRED COMPETENCIES:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational, computer and research skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to manage technological transitions for virtual workshops.
LOCATION
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
