What is an internship in virtual physical therapy?

An internship in virtual physical therapy is a hands-on learning experience where students or recent graduates work with licensed physical therapists to assist with patient care, but the services are provided remotely using telehealth platforms. Interns gain exposure to online patient assessments, treatment planning, and digital health tools, while developing communication and clinical reasoning skills in a virtual environment. This type of internship is ideal for those interested in the intersection of physical therapy and technology, offering practical experience in delivering care through video conferencing and other digital channels.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during a virtual physical therapy internship?

As a virtual physical therapy intern, you'll typically assist licensed therapists with tasks such as observing live telehealth sessions, preparing digital exercise plans, and conducting patient follow-up under supervision. You may also help with patient intake, documentation, and research for new therapy techniques suitable for remote delivery. Interns often collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including administrative staff and other healthcare professionals, to ensure smooth patient care and efficient clinic operations. This experience is valuable for developing communication skills and learning how digital tools can enhance patient outcomes in a remote setting.
