DESCRIPTION OF WORK

DEFINITION: This position operates heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets.
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for operating heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City right of way infrastructure including the stormwater system, roadway surfaces, sidewalks, curb and gutter. Employees in this position will work under supervision and guidance from the assigned Crew Supervisor as well as other division staff. This employee will perform assigned tasks to meet the operational needs of the divisions.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Operates heavy equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets.
  • Operates single axle and tandem dump trucks for hauling operations and for sand/salt brine applications during winter weather events.
  • Operates backhoes and excavators in the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of drainage systems including culverts, catch basins, and open ditches.
  • Operates TV camera truck and sewer jet truck.
  • Operates heavy equipment in the demolition of dilapidated houses and other structures.
  • Operates trucks during the collection of yard debris, including annual loose-leaf collections.
  • Perform/lead the repair, maintenance, and replacement of concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
  • Operates electrical hammer drills, circular saws, hand drills for the construction of concrete forms.
  • Operates heavy equipment at the city's compost and yard debris grinding site.
  • Performs general maintenance for tub grinding operations, including replacing hammers and teeth on tub grinders, greasing of hydraulic fittings, changing buckets on excavators and front-end loaders.
  • Operates heavy wheel loaders for Transfer Station Operations.
  • Transport heavy equipment to work sites.
  • Flags traffic and assists with setting up traffic control at work sites.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies as part of a division on-call schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of a valid Class "A" CDL; driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Four 10 hour work days. 40 hours per week. 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Emergency response as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Required close visual acuity to perform activities including the completion of daily logs, equipment reports, viewing a computer terminal and reading.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors where exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, and noise is typically encountered.
