Position Overview
Provides Laboratory support while gaining practical experience in municipal water and wastewater laboratory operations, regulatory compliance, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), sample handling, data management and environmental laboratory quality systems in accordance with NELAC standards. Participates in the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I) program.
Position Functions
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the intern will:
  • Enter analytical data into Sample Master LIMS.
  • Verify entered data against laboratory bench sheets, reports, and original records.
  • Review data for completeness, consistency, and transcription accuracy.
  • Support data cleanup and validation activities.
  • Report discrepancies or missing information to laboratory Manager and Staff.
  • Observe and assist with process control laboratory activities under the supervision of laboratory staff.
  • Under supervision of the Laboratory Manager, assist with various tasks throughout the laboratory.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including Florida Department of Health (FDOH) on-site assessment preparation and corrective actions.
  • Participate in the AS2I Program.
  • Participate in the laboratory safety program. Maintain a clean and orderly workspace.
  • Assist with preparation of internal reports, spreadsheets, charts, and presentations related to compliance activities.
  • Participate in meetings, site visits, and training activities as appropriate for educational development.
  • Perform general administrative tasks related to regulatory compliance, including filing, scanning, and document control.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, consistent with intern-level responsibilities
  • Assist with special projects involving process optimization, laboratory automation, data analytics, regulatory compliance initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Drive to and from various City work sites (City vehicle will be provided).

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED is required for this role
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related field, with an interest and aptitude to work in environmental samples testing laboratory
  • Experience with Microsoft office suite
  • Valid driver's license. Must obtain a State of Florida driver's license within thirty (30) days of employment.

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Coursework in water, wastewater, environmental regulations, or laboratory sciences.
  • Experience with data analysis, reporting, or technical writing.
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies such as FDEP, EPA, or local utilities (academic exposure acceptable)
  • Proficiency with excel spreadsheets, tables and formulas

Supplemental Information
Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement and a criminal background screening.
Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).
Position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis A and B during performance of regular duties. An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required.
