Job description

Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Telecommunications Officer located in Fort Mill, SC. As a TCO with FMPD, you are the critical first point of contact in an emergency, receiving calls, dispatching responders, and keeping officers and the public safe through fast, accurate communication.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive, monitor, and dispatch radio communications for emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Answer and screen incoming calls from the public and other public safety agencies; categorize, prioritize, and dispatch appropriate responders.
  • Enter, update, and delete information in the NCIC database as directed.
  • Run criminal and driver history checks as requested by officers in the field.
  • Enter and update departmental data; maintain department files and retrieve information for Police Officers as needed.
  • Make rapid, sound decisions in high-pressure and life-threatening situations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of FMPD's mission.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
What we Expect from You (Qualifications)
  • Minimum: high school diploma or equivalent; specialized telecommunications or emergency dispatch training is preferred.
  • Experience: approximately 1–2 years of relevant work, internship/apprenticeship, or equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain NCIC certification.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain SCCJA Basic Telecommunications certification.
  • Calm and composed under pressure with strong multitasking ability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills.

Physical and Work Requirements
  • Work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or console.
  • Intermittent sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • Occasional lifting of light objects.
  • Use of equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • Ability to distinguish between shades of color.
  • Extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
