Summer 2027 Engineering and Tech Internship About this position

Most engineering internships teach you how products are built.

At Boom, you help build them.

Boom Supersonic is building Overture, the world's fastest airliner, and Superpower, an industrial gas turbine built on the same core technology that advances our supersonic engine program.

We believe the best engineering internships don't happen on the sidelines. They happen where real engineering is getting done.

This is not a traditional internship.

You won't sit quietly in meetings, take notes, or shadow from the sidelines. As a Boom intern, you will be embedded directly within core teams, tackling real, high-stakes engineering problems. Working alongside bestโ€‘inโ€‘class engineers, you'll take on more responsibility and ownership than anywhere else in the industry. Youโ€™ll leave knowing your work actively pushed history forward.

Select Your Discipline Materials & Manufacturing Processes:

Youโ€™ll work on the materials and processes that go into Superpower, Boom's gas turbine engine. That means handsโ€‘on involvement in material selection, process development, lab categorization and couponโ€‘toโ€‘part testing for the highโ€‘performance alloys that make an engine possible. Own the whole process from ingot to forged disks and single crystal castings.

Ideal Candidate:

Solid fundamentals in material science of metallics and ceramics, with knowledge of the strengthening mechanisms of nickel superalloys and the thermal processing of ceramics both as coatings and molds.

Handsโ€‘on experience in an M&P lab to test, categorize and evaluate high performance materials including creep and LCF testing and metallography of superalloys.

Exposure to and experience running the machines for advanced processes including printing nickel superalloys and fabricating ceramics to support investment casting.

Manufacturing:

Youโ€™ll support the production processes turning Superpower's designs into real hardware. That means handsโ€‘on work across engine assembly, machining, tooling, and process development as the program builds toward production. You won't observe โ€“ you'll own a piece of it.

Ideal Candidate:

Handsโ€‘on manufacturing experience โ€“ time in a machine shop, on an assembly line, or building real hardware. This is required, not a niceโ€‘toโ€‘have.

Familiarity with machining processes, tooling, work instructions, or quality control in a production or R&D environment.

Genuine curiosity about how complex hardware comes together โ€“ and how to make it come together better, faster, and more reliably.

Electrical or Embedded Controls:

Youโ€™ll help design, build, and validate the electrical or control systems that bring Superpower to life. That includes instrumentation, controls, wiring architecture, and test systems that generate the data needed to develop Superpower. Your work will connect hardware, software, and test, turning ideas into reliable systems.

Ideal Candidate:

Experience designing, integrating, or testing electrical systems, whether through internships, research, Formula SAE, personal projects, or industry experience.

Familiarity with electrical design, controls, instrumentation, embedded systems, or hardware integration.

Someone who enjoys debugging complex systems and is energized by seeing hardware come to life.

Mechanical:

Youโ€™ll help define how Superpower comes together. This team is responsible for translating requirements into an integrated system, balancing performance, reliability, manufacturability, and testability while partnering closely with propulsion, electrical, and manufacturing engineers throughout the development process. You'll work across design, analysis, manufacturing, and test to solve real engineering problems as the engine evolves from concept to hardware.

Ideal Candidate:

Experience designing, analyzing, or building mechanical hardware through industry, research, internships, Formula SAE, or personal projects.

Familiarity with CAD, mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, or structural analysis.

Genuine curiosity about how complex hardware works and the drive to iterate until it works better.

Strong analytical and problemโ€‘solving skills with the ability to break down complex technical challenges and make thoughtful engineering tradeโ€‘offs.

Excited by working across disciplines to solve firstโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘ir kind engineering challenges with a highly collaborative team.

Turbomachinery:

Youโ€™ll help design the actual core engine within both Superpower, Boom's gas turbine for AI power generation and Symphony, our Mach 1.7 medium bypass turbofan. This team is responsible for the design, performance modeling, and detailed analysis of the engine, with work spanning thermodynamic cycle analysis, aerodynamics & aeromechanics, internal cooling flow, mechanical & structural component design, combustion, and testing.

Ideal Candidate:

Experience with propulsion, turbomachinery, thermodynamics, fluids, combustion, or heat transfer through coursework, research, internships, or industry.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to connect theory to real hardware and experimental data.

Excited by not just using stateโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘art analysis tools, but by creating their own; scripting together multiโ€‘disciplinary workflows that bring capabilities once only available to large teams to a single userโ€™s fingertips.

Software:

Youโ€™ll build the software that makes Boomโ€™s engineers faster. That means embedding directly with the teams designing, building, and testing Superpower - on the shop floor watching a part get made, at the test stand when data comes in - and shipping tools that remove whatever is slowing them down. Your code goes into daily use the same week you write it, and the people using it sit next to you.

Ideal Candidate:

Experience building real software people actually used - personal projects with users, open source contributions, hackathon wins, or production code from prior internships or research.

Strong fundamentals in at least one serious language, and fluency with modern AI development tools.

More excited to write code standing next to the machine it controls than alone in a cubicle - you want to see the part come off the line faster because of what you shipped.

Special Projects:

Youโ€™ll join Boomโ€™s team of universal problemโ€‘solvers โ€” the group we point at whatever is most broken, most urgent, or most important, anywhere in the company. Instead of going deep in one business function, youโ€™ll own a real piece of a highโ€‘stakes, crossโ€‘functional problem: driving a critical project thatโ€™s slipping back on track, building the analysis behind a major decision, standing up a business process that outlasts your summer, or getting to ground truth on an operation that isnโ€™t working. You wonโ€™t build the engine โ€” youโ€™ll help make sure the company building it runs. Youโ€™ll own the fix, not a recommendation.

Strong analytical horsepower โ€” fast in a spreadsheet, and able to turn messy data into a clear answer.

A track record of solving or leading something real โ€” a competition team you drove, research or a role that stretched you well past your experience level.

Equally comfortable in a spreadsheet and on a shop floor โ€” you'd rather get to ground truth in person than wait for a report.

Work Location

Internships require 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters located at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.

Internship Duration

Internships will run for 12 weeks with flexibility to accommodate for the academic semester.

Compensation

The hourly pay rate for this position is $35 per hour for Hardware, $40 per hour for Software. Boom will also provide a housing allowance of $2,000. Additional perks include onโ€‘site meals and gym access.

ITAR Requirement

To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
