What is an internship in SolidWorks 3D modeling?

An Internship in SolidWorks 3D Modeling is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, where you gain practical experience using SolidWorks software to create, edit, and analyze 3D models. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers or designers and may assist with product design, prototyping, and documentation tasks. This role helps interns develop CAD skills, apply engineering concepts, and prepare for a career in mechanical or product design.

How does an internship in SolidWorks 3D modeling typically collaborate with engineering teams during projects?

As a SolidWorks 3D Modeling intern, you'll often work closely with engineering teams to develop and refine CAD models based on project requirements. This collaboration may involve attending team meetings, discussing design objectives with engineers, and incorporating feedback to update models. Interns typically support the design process by creating detailed parts, assemblies, and technical drawings, ensuring that their work aligns with broader project goals. This hands-on teamwork offers valuable exposure to professional workflows and helps interns build communication and problem-solving skills relevant to engineering environments.

What is the difference between Internship Solidworks 3D Modeling vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Solidworks 3D ModelingMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically students or entry-level with basic Solidworks skillsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, often with experience
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in design or engineering firmsFull-time professional role in manufacturing, product design, or engineering firms
Industry UsageUsed for gaining experience, assisting in design projectsResponsible for designing, analyzing, and developing mechanical systems

While an Internship Solidworks 3D Modeling focuses on gaining hands-on experience with basic design tasks, a Mechanical Design Engineer holds a full-time role with advanced responsibilities in designing and developing mechanical products. Both roles utilize Solidworks, but the engineer role requires more credentials and experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in SolidWorks 3D modeling?

To thrive in a SolidWorks 3D Modeling internship, you need a foundational understanding of engineering principles, CAD design, and experience with SolidWorks software, typically gained through relevant coursework or technical training. Familiarity with SolidWorks, 3D modeling techniques, and possibly certifications like CSWA (Certified SolidWorks Associate) are valuable assets. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills are important soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting design requirements. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient modeling and effective teamwork in engineering and product development environments.

Job description

SolidWorks Mechanical Designer – Electrical Equipment Manufacturing

Location: Mira Loma, CA – Onsite
Target Market: Ontario / Riverside / Inland Empire
Pay Range: $32.00–$45.00 per hour
Employment Type: Full-Time

Opportunity

Legacy Career Solutions is partnering with a rapidly growing electrical equipment manufacturer in the Inland Empire that designs and manufactures custom power-distribution equipment for commercial and industrial applications.

We are seeking an experienced SolidWorks Mechanical Designer / Drafter to produce detailed 2D and 3D models, assembly drawings, and fabrication prints supporting custom electrical equipment manufacturing.

This position works directly with engineering and manufacturing personnel and requires someone who can translate designs and specifications into accurate, production-ready drawings in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, modify, and maintain detailed SolidWorks drawings and 3D models for custom electrical equipment assemblies.
  • Develop and update mechanical and electrical blueprints, including component placement, bus configurations, and related layouts.
  • Translate conceptual designs and specifications into detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Revise and maintain drawing documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and supporting documentation.
  • Communicate design changes to production and quality teams to ensure accurate manufacturing.
  • Organize drawing files within company design and data-management systems.
  • Support technical drawing requirements associated with product certification.
  • Coordinate with vendors and fabrication partners regarding part fitment and manufacturability.
  • Manage multiple drawing projects and changing production priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong SolidWorks proficiency, including both 2D and 3D modeling.
  • 2+ years of experience as a Drafter, Mechanical Designer, Design Technician, or similar position in a mechanical or electrical engineering environment.
  • Experience working with sheet metal, switchgear, or related fabricated products.
  • Experience with bending and forming materials.
  • Ability to interpret and develop mechanical drawings, schematics, and related technical documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Ability to work onsite in Jurupa Valley, California.

Highly Preferred

  • Switchgear, switchboard, panelboard, electrical-equipment, or control-panel manufacturing experience
  • Sheet-metal design
  • Bus bar layout
  • Enclosure fabrication
  • Electrical panel layouts and power-distribution equipment
  • UL 891 familiarity
  • Knowledge of UL, NEMA, and NEC standards applicable to electrical equipment
  • AutoCAD Electrical or similar software
  • PDM/Product Data Management systems
  • 3D visualization/rendering tools

An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is more than someone who can simply operate SolidWorks. We are seeking someone who understands how drawings become manufactured products and can create accurate designs that fabrication and production teams can actually build.
