Job description

Description:

WeTheHobby is one of the fastest-growing companies in sports cards, live commerce, and collectibles. We're building the technology platform that powers everything from live breaking and inventory management to grading, consignment, customer identity, and marketplace integrations.

As we continue to scale, we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who wants to help shape the technical foundation of the company, not just build features.

This is a highly collaborative role working directly with the SVP of Product Engineering to modernize our platform, improve developer velocity, and architect the next generation of systems that power WeTheHobby.

What You'll Work On

  • Architect the Future: Help evolve our platform from a tightly coupled monolith into a scalable, service-oriented architecture that supports the company's next phase of growth.
  • Build Modern Services: Design and implement resilient backend services and APIs using modern engineering patterns and the right technology for each problem.
  • Eliminate Manual Friction: Replace spreadsheet-driven and manual operational workflows with reliable, automated software solutions.
  • Connect the Ecosystem: Build integrations between WTH and partners including inventory systems, marketplaces, grading services, and live commerce platforms.
  • Engineer with AI: Leverage AI tools such as Cursor, Claude, and LLMs to accelerate development, modernize legacy code, automate documentation, and prototype new capabilities.
  • Improve Platform Reliability: Increase system observability, resilience, and operational visibility across the platform.
  • Raise the Bar: Mentor engineers through architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical leadership while helping establish engineering best practices.
  • Partner Across the Business: Work closely with Product, Operations, and business stakeholders to solve complex operational challenges with thoughtful software design.

What You’ll Build With

  • Modern backend services built with .NET and Python
  • React & TypeScript frontends
  • PostgreSQL and event-driven architecture
  • AWS cloud infrastructure (EC2, RDS, Fargate, EventBridge)
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
  • Azure DevOps CI/CD
  • Modern AI-assisted development using Cursor and Claude

Who You Are

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving hard systems problems.

  • You don't simply ask, "What's the next ticket?" You ask:
  • How should this system evolve?
  • How can we eliminate this manual process?
  • How can we build this once instead of solving it repeatedly?

You enjoy architecture as much as implementation and are excited by the opportunity to help shape the technical direction of a rapidly growing company. You're comfortable working in an existing platform while helping define its future, and you understand that great engineering is about choosing the right tool for the problem—not being tied to a particular language or framework

Requirements:
  • 8+ years building and operating production software systems.
  • Strong experience building backend services using modern object-oriented or service-oriented technologies (e.g., Python/FastAPI, Go, Node.js, or similar).
  • Experience designing and evolving distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, or microservices.
  • PostgreSQL or strong relational database design and optimization experience.
  • AWS cloud infrastructure (EC2, RDS, Fargate, S3, or similar cloud-native services). o
  • Modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, observability, and Infrastructure as Code. Experience modernizing or decomposing legacy systems into scalable services is highly desirable.
  • Experience using AI development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) as part of your daily engineering workflow

Why WeTheHobby?

We're solving problems that don't exist at most software companies.

  • You'll work at the intersection of:
  • Live commerce o Sports collectibles
  • Marketplace integrations
  • Inventory systems
  • AI-assisted engineering
  • Customer identity
  • Operational automation

You'll have significant influence over our architecture, work alongside executive leadership, and help build the technology that powers one of the hobby's most innovative companies.

If you're excited by complex systems, startup velocity, and building software that directly impacts the business every day, we'd love to talk.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated salary range for this position based upon location in Rochester, NY and experience is $98,000 - $132,000

To comply with Federal law, WeTheHobby participates in E-Verify. All newly-hired employees are verified through this electronic system established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) to confirm their identity and employment eligibility.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, or ascend stairs in an office environment.
  • Lift and carry items such as laptops, monitors, and small office equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Navigate a typical office setting, including attending in-person meetings or collaborating across departments.
