Internship Signal Integrity Engineer information

What is the difference between Internship Signal Integrity Engineer vs Signal Integrity Engineer?

AspectInternship Signal Integrity EngineerSignal Integrity Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a relevant degreeBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time professional role, independent project work
Industry UsageUsed in training and development phasesEstablished role in electronics, telecommunications, and chip design

The main difference is that an Internship Signal Integrity Engineer is a temporary, entry-level position aimed at gaining experience, while a Signal Integrity Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing and analyzing high-speed signal paths in electronic systems.

What is an internship signal integrity engineer?

Internship Signal Integrity Engineers are students or recent graduates who assist in analyzing and improving the quality of electrical signals within electronic circuits and systems. They typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers to learn about signal integrity concepts, testing methods, and simulation tools. Their responsibilities may include assisting in the design, simulation, and validation of high-speed circuits to minimize issues like noise, crosstalk, and signal loss. These internships provide hands-on experience and exposure to industry-standard tools and practices, preparing individuals for full-time engineering roles in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship signal integrity engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Signal Integrity Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, transmission line theory, and signal integrity concepts, often supported by coursework or a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, HFSS, or SI analysis software, as well as experience with oscilloscopes and network analyzers, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and solve complex problems. These skills ensure accurate analysis, successful project outcomes, and the ability to contribute meaningfully in high-speed electronic design environments.

What do internship signal integrity engineers do?

As an Internship Signal Integrity Engineer, you can expect to work on projects that involve analyzing and optimizing high-speed signal transmission within electronic circuits and PCBs. Typical tasks include running simulations using industry tools (such as SPICE or HFSS), assisting with measurement and validation of signal integrity in lab settings, and collaborating with senior engineers to troubleshoot issues related to noise, crosstalk, and timing. Interns often participate in cross-functional meetings, gaining exposure to both hardware and PCB design teams, which provides a valuable learning experience and insight into the product development lifecycle.

Job description

Senior Electronics Design Engineer

About the Role

As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you will design and develop the low-voltage and mixed-signal hardware that controls, senses, and protects our Solid-State Transformer (SST) subsystems. You'll own boards end-to-end - from schematic through bring-up and release to production and contribute to architectural decisions. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who wants depth in mixed-signal design for high-reliability power conversion products.

Responsibilities

  • Design low-voltage and mixed-signal circuits for SST products, balancing performance, reliability, safety, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Select microcontrollers and key ICs; engage with silicon vendors to evaluate fit and review errata.
  • Design and validate control, sensing, and protection circuitry - including analog measurement chains, digital I/O, and fault detection.
  • Design isolated interface circuits like signal isolators, isolated DC-DC, and fiber optics between different voltage domains.
  • Build redundancy and fault tolerance into board designs to meet single-fault-tolerant and product-lifetime requirements; contribute to DFMEA and derating reviews.
  • Implement industrial and high-bandwidth communication interfaces (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, Modbus) with attention to signal integrity.
  • Partner with a dedicated PCB layout engineer. Define stackup, impedance, isolation, and routing constraints, review iterations, and execute layout directly when needed.
  • Own full lifecycle development of PCBAs: specifications, schematics, BOM, prototyping, bring-up, EMI/EMC compliance, and release to production.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers on interface and timing definition, and with mechanical engineers on connector placement, thermal, and enclosure integration.
  • Maintain documentation of requirements, design decisions, and release notes for traceability and compliance.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years designing low-voltage and mixed-signal hardware, with at least some experience in high-reliability or high-voltage systems.
  • Experience taking boards from schematic through bring-up and production, including MCU selection and protection circuitry.
  • Solid analog and mixed-signal design skills, with knowledge of component selection and derating for harsh environments.
  • Experience designing isolated interface circuits between voltage domains.
  • Hands-on experience with communication interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN/CAN-FD, or Modbus.
  • Proficiency with PCB CAD and simulation tools (preferably Altium Designer, SPICE, and/or PLECS).
  • Hands-on PCB layout experience sufficient to specify constraints, review layout, and execute layout directly when needed.
  • Strong board bring-up, debugging, and lab testing skills, with working knowledge of EMI/EMC best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%, including internationally.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Shipped a PCBA in a high-volume product.
  • Exposure to functional safety (IEC 61508, ISO 13849) or HV design and certification standards (IEC 61800, UL 508C, IEC 62477).
  • Experience with high-reliability design for industrial, grid, or similar harsh-environment applications.
