Data Curator
Job Description:
Rothe is seeking a Data Curator to provide data acquisition, curation, metadata standardization, and database operations support for NASA's Open Science Data Repositories (OSDR) within the NASA Ames Research Center's. The incumbent will support the team with data submissions, high quality dataset curation to enable trustworthy public access and computational reuse, and the development and implementation of scientifically accepted metadata standards. They will collaborate with the scientific user community and project collaborators (within NASA, academia, and industry) to enhance the OSDR user experience and support database operations. The incumbent will also provide support to the space biological and space health user communities by responding to metadata and dataset inquiries.
Functional Responsibilities:
  • Curate space bioscience omics, phenotypic, physiological, and behavioral datasets generated by OSDR and collaborators or submitted by principal investigators.
  • Curate data across tabular, imaging, and video formats by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information from peer-reviewed scientific journals and direct submissions, applying scientific content knowledge to verify dataset accuracy and enhance public access and reuse.
  • Review scientific data submissions to the database for quality and relevancy. Review, research and resolve quality control reports findings. Generate data quality assessment reports.
  • Modify and execute data processing, analysis, publication, and federation pipelines.
  • Field inquiries from the data system user community.
  • Develop documentation and tutorials regarding effective use of the database for the user community.
  • Maintain quality control and integrity of databases and query tools for data mining as part of a collaborative team based on technical content expertise in a scientific field.
Education and Experience:
Minimum Education: Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, bioengineering, or a related field; or a Bachelor's degree in one of these fields.
Minimum Experience: At least 2 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree, or at least 4 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with biocuration: populating, organizing, formatting metadata and data files for physiological-phenotypic and/or omics datasets.
  • Experience with bioimaging file formats, processes and analysis.
  • Familiarity with biostatistical concepts and bioinformatics.
  • Some programming experience in at least one scripting language (e.g., R, Python, Unix).
  • Lab experience, ideally with exposure to omics technologies and common laboratory assays (e.g., next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, and microarray platforms).
  • Experience with genomic and/or phenotypic data management and analysis.
  • Familiarity with version control tools (e.g., GitHub).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with Open Science Principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry or academic experience in one or more bioimaging or other bioassay modalities (e.g., microscopy, micro-computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography, ultrasonography, tonometry, flow cytometry, western blot).
  • Familiarity with the command line environment.
  • Experience with additional programming languages, database technologies, or web technologies (e.g., SQL, C++, XML, PHP, MATLAB).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance while consistently exercising good judgment.
