The Duke University Medical Center Library invites applications to our paid, year-long, mentored internship. Applicants must be Master's students in a Library/Information Science program. Internships are 1 year with the potential to renew for a second year. This internship will help you develop skills for success in any academic library setting.

Our interns gain experience across library departments and are true members of our library staff. We provide mentorship, skill development, and direct experience that will help you be competitive for positions in all kinds of academic libraries. Our previous interns have co-authored publications in scholarly journals, presented work at local and national conferences, and made significant contributions to our library.

About our library:

The Duke University Medical Center Library provides library services to the academic medical community in the Duke School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and across Duke Health. The Medical Center Library maintains robust and substantially electronic collections comprising of biomedical and health sciences journals, databases, electronic book packages, and electronic book titles. We partner closely with our academic library colleagues across campus on a shared integrated library system using Alma and Primo.

Work Arrangement - On-site/Part-time

Time Commitment:

• 20 hours/week
• 1 year with potential to extend for a second year
• Hours are flexible, but they must take place between 8am and 6pm

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate must be enrolled in a Master's degree Library/Information Science program.

Please note that a background in STEM or biomedicine is NOT REQUIRED.

About this internship:

This internship primarily works with the Content & Discovery department, which integrates technical and access services. You will have the opportunity to work behind the scenes and also see the impact and importance of library resources for patrons. You will also get some exposure to research and education services, including the opportunity to develop practical skills and project work in research guides, literature searching, and research impact projects.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the daily operations of the interlibrary loan service
• Work on knowledgebase maintenance, including updating holdings to enable resource sharing
• Monitor vendor updates in Alma

• Provides staffing to the Service Desk as needed
• Participate in bibliometric, research impact, and data visualization projects
• Compile analytics on institutional publishing
• Maintain library research guides
• Contribute to service improvement initiatives
• Assist patrons with reference and research questions via chat, email, Zoom, and at the library service desk
• Contribute to other projects and publications as needed

Starting Date:

The position will be available starting in July/August.

Library staff are currently working both remotely and on-site, however, the intern will be expected to perform most of their work on-site at the library in order to get the most complete professional experience.
