Job description


This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Geotechnical Engineer for our Tempe, AZ office. The successful candidate will provide support to WSP's project managers responsible for delivering geotechnical engineering projects to our clients. The ideal candidate will have an educational background in engineering fundamentals, with an emphasis on geotechnical/geological engineering; excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills; and will be a proactive problem solver.
Your Impact
  • Perform geotechnical field investigations and construction oversight.
  • Under general supervision will set up geotechnical investigations (i.e. driller acquisition, traffic control, permitting, utility locates, etc.)
  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
  • Perform basic support and design engineering computations, including quantity calculations, foundation design, slope stability, etc. under the guidance of a senior engineer.
  • Design or redesign complex layouts and drawings from general written or verbal specifications from the project team.
  • Prepare geotechnical design reports under the guidance of a senior engineer.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and permitting.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement, and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Will travel to project sites in Arizona and possibly the western US. The job will be approximately up to 50% field work; and approximately 30% of the field work may require travel to project sites beyond the Phoenix metro area.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Cilvi Engineering, Geological Engineering or closely related discipline
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset
  • EIT, or the ability to obtain the EIT within 1 year of hire
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel
  • Work well in a team environment
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Engineer in Training Certification
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline
  • AutoCAD experience
