Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a detail-oriented, well-organized, and dependable Geologist or Environmental Scientist to join our firm in Birmingham, AL. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and dedicated to contributing to our success. This full-time role requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. Arcadis offers performance-based evaluations that provide opportunities for career advancement within the company.

Role accountabilities:

Responsibilities for this position include a combination of field and office-related tasks, with travel required for field assignments.

Field activities may involve oversight of drilling operations-including installing monitoring wells and describing soil or rock-collecting soil, groundwater, and vapor samples in compliance with State and Federal standards, implementing injection or other in-situ remedial technologies, and overseeing remedial system installations and subcontractors.

The role also requires extensive note-taking, effective coordination and communication with project team members, and providing incident response support for environmental sample planning and collection, as well as rail client and regulator correspondence and onsite contractor oversight for train derailments or HAZMAT spills, which may require travel throughout the southeast.

Fieldwork will frequently be performed at project sites where environmental media (such as soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water) may be impacted by hazardous substances or wastes. Arcadis provides comprehensive Health and Safety training, support, and mentoring for all project activities, promoting a strong culture where employee and public safety come first.

Office tasks include data management-compiling, manipulating, and evaluating data-assisting with the writing and preparation of technical reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda, preparing cost estimates and proposals, coordinating work schedules with subcontractors, and producing figures, maps, and boring logs.

Candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, and be able to multi-task and efficiently manage their time. This position requires frequent travel and fieldwork, which may be up to 70-90% of your time during certain periods, with travel sometimes requiring hotel stays.

Candidates must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions and for extended periods and must be able to meet the physical demands associated with fieldwork, including lifting equipment up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and working alone at remote sites.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Geology, Geosciences, or Environmental Science
  • 1-3 years of related work experience, proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Current valid driver's license with a clean driving record

Preferred qualifications:

  • Current OSHA HAZWOPER 40 HR/8 HR training
  • Previous industry, consulting, or regulatory internship experience
  • 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training
