Description
The Research Assistant for the Office of University Historian assists in all aspects of research for the University Historian at Samford University, including researching, writing, editing, and interviewing.
Job Duties
  • Conduct archival, digital, and secondary-source research in support of the university historian's current research projects.
  • Conduct and transcribe oral history interviews related to the university historian's current research projects.
  • Organize archival materials, digital files, oral histories, and bibliographic databases (Zotero, EndNote, Omeka, etc.) related to the university historian's current research projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by the university historian.

Qualifications
  • Specialized skills in researching, writing, editing, and interviewing are acquired through significant educational training, typically obtained with a bachelor's degree in History, Journalism, or another relevant humanities-based field of study.
  • Ability to work independently and under the supervision of the university historian.
  • Frequently remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Frequently view computer screen, microfilm/fiche reader, and hand-written text up to 7 hours per day.
  • Occasionally move in an archival or office setting to access filing cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Occasionally lift up to 15 or more pounds as needed.
  • Ability to report to work daily.
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends/holidays as required.
  • Some travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with university archives, civil rights collections, or oral history projects, or local historical societies.
