Job description

The Senior Designer, Games Marketing plays an important, hands-on role in concepting and developing campaigns and marketing efforts that support The New York Times' business for the Games product. This role sits within the Games marketing vertical and reports to the Associate Creative Director, Games, Marketing.

You will work closely with other marketing creative team members (writers, designers and our audio and video teams), as well as partners in marketing and media strategy, product design, audience insights and brand identity to bring to life campaigns across the marketing funnel that drive performance while upholding a high bar for design craft. You are responsible for driving creative ideation, execution and production of marketing assets, as well as helping evolve the design systems, libraries and templates that support experimentation at scale.

You bring a refined aesthetic, a nuanced understanding of typography, layout and color, motion design and strong design craft skills. We want an individual who is not only just a stellar designer, but also ideafocused and can do the work of efficiently bringing their ideas to life in a way that inspires and excites others, and then presents them effectively and enthusiastically.

This is a temporary 6 month role reporting to the Associate Creative Director, Marketing, Games. It can be either remote within the US or hybrid in our NYC offices. If hybrid in our NYC headquarters, you can typically expect to come into the office 3 days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute conceptual, visually compelling marketing campaigns for the Games product, ensuring work supports awareness, consideration, conversion and retention goals across the full reader and subscriber journey.
  • Design and adapt campaign creative across paid, owned and earned channels - including digital, social, email, inapp placements, app stores and OOH - in line with The Times' brand standards and Games marketing strategy.
  • Translate inproduct experiences, editorial formats and key feature benefits into clear marketing assets that deepen engagement and drive habitual use of the Games product.
  • Implement the practical application of design systems for Games marketing, including creating, implementing and maintaining component libraries and style guides in Figma, and ensuring pixelperfect execution across platforms and devices.
  • Collaborate with writers, art directors, audio and video partners to concept, refine and ship creative that clearly communicates the value of our journalism and our lifestyle products and drives subscriptions and engagement.
  • Help develop and maintain scalable visual systems, templates and libraries that enable disciplined experimentation across paid and owned marketing channels while upholding a high bar for craft and brand consistency.
  • Work from creative briefs, participate actively in reviews and incorporate feedback from stakeholders, staying comfortable with shifts in strategy or approach based on evolving business needs.
  • Create clear, compelling presentation materials and articulate the rationale for your design decisions to colleagues and leadership, connecting creative choices to performance, user behavior and broader marketing strategy.
  • Bring fresh ideas and a spirit of experimentation to how we market our journalism, product experiences and bundles, contributing to a culture of continuous learning on the marketing creative team.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Associate Creative Director, Marketing, Games.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of hands-on graphic design experience at an advertising agency, digital agency, studio or inhouse team, with a focus on marketing or advertising creative and demonstrable experience in growthoriented campaigns.
  • A portfolio that shows both sharp execution and conceptual thinking across social, digital display, email, inapp, app store and print, with clear examples of how your design choices clarify complex ideas and drive performance across the funnel.
  • Deep proficiency in core visual design principles - typography, layout, balance, hierarchy, proportion, color, emphasis and unity - and a refined aesthetic from concept through production.
  • Expertlevel skills in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, including building and maintaining components, styles, libraries and design systems used across a marketing organization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in design systems: creating, implementing and maintaining component libraries and style guides; ensuring pixelperfect execution; and applying system thinking with a focus on practical implementation.
  • Proficiency in motion graphics and animation, with hands-on experience using After Effects and other motion tools to bring narratives to life across marketing channels.
  • Experience partnering with developers and product teams to ship highquality digital experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.A., B.F.A. or M.F.A. in graphic design, visual communication or another related design discipline, or equivalent professional experience and portfolio that demonstrates comparable design training and craft.
  • Comfort working crossfunctionally with partners in marketing strategy, media, product design, audience insights and brand identity, and enthusiasm for collaborating on campaigns that both look great and perform against growth goals.
  • Understanding of trends in digital advertising and growth marketing, plus familiarity with the latest social media ecosystem and how brands show up in a way that feels authentic and aligned with our standards.
  • A belief in the value of journalism to people and society, and genuine curiosity about our work and company - ideally, you enjoy reading, watching and listening to New York Times journalism and playing New York Times Games.
