Internship Remote Surface Pattern Design is an entry-level, project-based role focused on creating repeating patterns for various products, often as a learning opportunity. Remote Textile Designers are more experienced professionals designing textiles for commercial use. While both work remotely and involve pattern creation, internships are more about gaining skills, whereas textile designers handle full projects and client needs.

Is AI taking over surface pattern design?

AI is increasingly used in surface pattern design to generate ideas and assist with creating complex patterns, but it does not replace the role of a designer. Human creativity, understanding of trends, and craftsmanship remain essential skills for surface pattern designers, especially in a remote work environment where software tools like Adobe Illustrator are common. AI serves as a tool to enhance productivity rather than replace the need for skilled designers.

What is a remote surface pattern design internship?

A remote surface pattern design internship is a temporary position where interns work online, often from home, to create decorative designs that can be applied to surfaces like textiles, wallpapers, packaging, or products. Interns typically use digital tools such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to develop patterns, learn about design trends, and build a professional portfolio. This role offers valuable experience in the field of surface pattern design, while providing flexibility to work from any location.

How to find a design internship?

To find a remote surface pattern design internship, search on job boards, company websites, and design-specific platforms like Behance or Dribbble. Prepare a strong portfolio showcasing your pattern work, and highlight skills in design software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Networking and reaching out directly to design studios can also increase your chances of securing an internship.

How much does a pattern designer make?

Pattern designers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and whether they work freelance or for a company. Entry-level remote surface pattern designers typically earn between $30,000 and $50,000 annually, while experienced designers can make $60,000 or more, especially with a strong portfolio and proficiency in design tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

How to get into surface pattern design?

To get into surface pattern design, develop skills in drawing and digital design using tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Build a portfolio showcasing your patterns, learn about trends and licensing, and consider taking courses or tutorials to improve your technical and creative abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Remote Surface Pattern Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Surface Pattern Designer, you need a strong foundation in design principles, color theory, and pattern creation, often supported by coursework or a portfolio in graphic or textile design. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator and Photoshop) and familiarity with digital drawing tablets are typically required. Creative thinking, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set outstanding candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing original, high-quality patterns and collaborating efficiently in a virtual team environment.

Job description

It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 50+ million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world's relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We've been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams - People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more - provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

This role owns end-to-end subsidiary governance reporting across Block's 11 regulated entities - managing cadence, coordinating with entity-level compliance leads, synthesizing cross-entity intelligence, and delivering Board-ready governance reporting. You'll operate as a named IC with published scope, decision-making authority over how you execute, and direct accountability for reporting quality.

You Will
  • Own the subsidiary reporting cycle across 11 regulated entities - from cadence design through final delivery
  • Coordinate with MLROs and entity-level compliance leads to gather, validate, and synthesize reporting inputs on a recurring schedule
  • Compose cross-entity narratives that surface patterns, risks, and themes for leadership consumption
  • Deliver Board-quality governance reporting (ARC and subsidiary committee materials) under deadline pressure
  • Assess the substantive quality of reporting content - applying governance judgment, not just formatting
  • Maintain awareness of entity-specific regulatory contexts to inform reporting accuracy and relevance
  • Manage reporting templates and format stewardship for subsidiary deliverables
  • Identify gaps where reporting needs exceed current capability and flag them for prioritization
You Have
  • 7+ years in compliance, governance, risk, or regulatory reporting
  • Direct experience producing Board-level or senior leadership reporting
  • Experience managing reporting across multiple regulated entities or jurisdictions
  • Strong corporate governance knowledge - you understand what Boards need and what stays operational
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear, concise narratives
  • Fluency with AI tools as a daily workflow accelerant - you use AI for drafting, synthesis, and pattern detection, and you know where human governance judgment must override
  • Experience managing reporting cycles with tight deadlines and multiple stakeholders
  • Strong written communication - you write for executives, not for compliance peers
  • Ability to work autonomously, exercise judgment, and own your scope

Even Better

  • Financial services, fintech, or payments industry experience
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g. CAMS, CRCM, CFE)
  • Experience with multiple regulatory regimes (UK FCA, AUSTRAC, MAS, CBI, etc.)
  • Data visualization skills or experience building reporting dashboards

We're working to build a more inclusive economy where our customers have equal access to opportunity, and we strive to live by these same values in building our workplace. Block is an equal opportunity employer evaluating all employees and job applicants without regard to identity or any legally protected class. We will consider qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records for employment in accordance with state and local laws and "fair chance" ordinances.

We believe in being fair, and are committed to an inclusive interview experience, including providing reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants throughout the recruitment process. We encourage applicants to share any needed accommodations with their recruiter, who will treat these requests as confidentially as possible. Want to learn more about what we're doing to build a workplace that is fair and square? Check out our I+D page.

While there is no specific deadline to apply for this role, U.S. roles are typically open for an average of 55 days before being filled by a successful candidate. Please refer to the date listed at the top of this job page for when this role was first posted.
