What is a remote Shopify developer internship?

Remote Shopify developer internships are temporary positions where students or recent graduates work online to learn and assist with building, customizing, and maintaining e-commerce websites using the Shopify platform. Interns gain hands-on experience in web development, work with Shopify's tools and APIs, and often collaborate with experienced developers and clients virtually. These internships help individuals develop practical coding skills, understand e-commerce workflows, and build a portfolio of real-world Shopify projects, all while working from a location of their choice.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a remote Shopify developer internship?

As a remote Shopify Developer intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as customizing Shopify themes, implementing new features using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and integrating third-party apps through APIs. Interns often assist with troubleshooting store issues, optimizing site performance, and supporting the launch of new products or promotional campaigns. You'll likely collaborate closely with senior developers, designers, and marketing teams, gaining hands-on experience in both technical development and e-commerce business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Shopify developer internship?

To excel as an Internship Remote Shopify Developer, you should have a basic understanding of web development fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a familiarity with the Shopify platform. Experience with Shopify's Liquid templating language, version control systems like Git, and optionally certifications from Shopify or related bootcamps are valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively in a remote setting and respond to feedback. These skills and qualifications ensure you can build, customize, and maintain Shopify stores efficiently while adapting to the unique challenges of remote teamwork.

About the role

We're looking for an Intermediate Software Developer, Full Stack (Python/React) to join our growing AI Engineering team and help build reliable, production-grade AI and data products for one of Canada's largest P&C insurers. You'll contribute across the full technology stack-from information extraction and LLM-powered features to distributed systems, frontend platforms, cloud infrastructure, and delivery automation

What you'll do here:

  • Work within a multidisciplinary environment that brings together data science, software engineering, actuarial science, business, and design.
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and operate reliable services and data pipelines in production.
  • Develop end-to-end information extraction solutions, including classification, OCR and document-layout processing, model-based extraction, downstream refinement, and validation.
  • Take LLM- and machine-learning-backed features from prototype to production by integrating cloud model providers and balancing quality, latency, reliability, and cost.
  • Design and own distributed system components, including queue-based pipelines, fan-out and fan-in workflows, backpressure, idempotency, failure handling, retry semantics, and safeguards against data loss or duplication.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across distributed pipelines using structured logs, custom metrics, and traceable queries that follow a failed request through the system.
  • Influence the AI roadmap of the biggest P&C insurer in Canada.
  • Build and maintain frontend applications and shared React component libraries in a monorepo, with a focus on TypeScript design, build performance, bundling, and production delivery.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform, including reusable modules, remote state, provider version pinning, and multi-environment configurations.
  • Design and operate AWS solutions beyond application services, including networking, load balancing, API gateways, encryption and key management, IAM, and log and metric delivery pipelines.
  • Design CI/CD workflows, including reusable pipelines, environment matrices, and production approval gates.
  • Keep pace with new technologies and apply them thoughtfully to improve your solutions.
  • Tune containerized services for performance and cost by evaluating resource sizing, concurrency limits, and actual bottlenecks under load.
  • Share knowledge with interns, data scientists, and software developers to help the team grow.

What you bring to the table:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or any combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Python, REST/ GraphQL APIs, AWS (S3, Lambda, Sagemaker or similar services).
  • Experience with machine learning and scientific computing libraries such as scikit-learn, NumPy, SciPy, Tensorflow, etc.
  • Experience with pipelines, Ingestions/automations.
  • Good knowledge of software engineering practices such as design patterns, knowledge of the development cycle and other tools such as Git, Jira, Confluence.
  • The commitment to be a great, collaborative teammate.
  • Unlimited curiosity and a passion to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to focus on vaguely defined issues requiring the application of a creative approach.
  • Strong communication, time management and work organization skills.
  • If you don't have experience in the AI field, a strong motivation to learn this new and exciting field.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English-speaking colleagues across the country

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience migrating a dependency manager, CI platform, or infrastructure layout in a live codebase.
  • Experience building local development and integration-test harnesses using emulated cloud services.
  • Experience tuning containerized services for resource utilization, concurrency, latency, throughput, and cost.
  • Knowledge of DevOps tools such as Kubernetes and ELK.
  • Knowledge of MongoDB, Kafka, or comparable data and messaging technologies.
