Job Description:
Job Summary
Responsible for performing technical and clinical duties to support surgical procedures and ensure optimal patient outcomes in the operating room. Assists surgeons and nurses by preparing and maintaining sterile fields, handling instruments, and anticipating procedural needs. Ensures equipment functionality, adherence to infection control standards, and compliance with surgical protocols. Contributes to a safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical environment through technical expertise and collaboration with the surgical team.
Essential Functions
• Prepares operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies according to procedure requirements.
• Assists surgical teams during procedures by passing instruments, sponges, and other sterile items as needed.
• Ensures proper identification, handling, and disposition of surgical specimens.
• Maintains sterility throughout surgical procedures by following aseptic techniques and infection control protocols.
• Inspects, assembles, and ensures proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment before and after procedures.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and responds promptly to intraoperative changes or emergencies.
• Collaborates with circulating nurses and surgical staff to ensure smooth workflow and patient safety.
• Participates in restocking and maintaining inventory of surgical supplies and instruments.
• Provides mentorship and guidance to junior technologists and students as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
High school diploma or equivalent and vocational/technical training in a designated technical area
Experience Requirement
2-5 years of experience in a healthcare, clinical setting, or a relevant area
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
Certifications & Licensures
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery - Certified (Surgery TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing, Basic Life Support (BLS)
