Job Summary
We are seeking a PFAS Technical Director to provide enterprise-level technical leadership and strategic direction for Battelle's PFAS science, technology development, and market-facing solutions. This role recognizes a sustained record of scientific and technical achievement with significant impact on Battelle's technical reputation, competitive position, and requires national stature in PFAS-related disciplines.
The PFAS Technical Director will define and steward Battelle's PFAS technical vision-from research and development through commercialization and deployment-while serving as a trusted authority to senior clients and internal leadership. This role will shape large-scale, multi-year portfolios spanning identification, forensics, fate and transport, treatment, and destruction technologies, aligning Battelle's internal investments and offerings with evolving regulatory, market, and stakeholder needs.
The PFAS Technical Director sits within the Environment and Agriculture Business Line but operates at an enterprise level. The role interfaces routinely with Executive Leadership, Business Line Directors, Tech Fellows, Business Development leaders, and external partners to ensure Battelle's PFAS capabilities remain differentiated, credible, and commercially successful.
Responsibilities
Enterprise Technical Leadership
  • Serve as Battelle's senior technical authority for PFAS, defining long-term technical direction and ensuring scientific rigor, defensibility, and innovation across all PFAS-related efforts.
  • Develop and implement novel PFAS technical approaches, methodologies, and technologies that advance the state of the practice and strengthen Battelle's national reputation.
  • Represent Battelle in matters of major scientific or technical significance with senior clients, regulators, and technical bodies.

Research-to-Market Strategy and Execution
  • Own and guide Battelle's PFAS research-to-commercialization pipeline.
  • Set portfolio priorities and balance technical and commercial risk.

Business Planning, Capture, and Growth
  • Collaborate in the development of business plans and capture strategies.
  • Maintain senior-level client relationships that enable sustained growth.

Leadership and Mentorship
  • Mentor and develop technical staff and future leaders.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams across business units.

Key Qualifications
  • Recognized national authority in PFAS-related disciplines with a sustained record of scientific and technical impact.
  • PhD in a relevant field (or exceptional equivalent experience) including Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Material Sciences.
  • Typically 20+ years of progressive technical leadership experience.
  • Ability to travel approximately 40-60%, consistent with enterprise technical leadership responsibilities.
