What is a remote fashion designer internship?

A remote fashion designer internship is a temporary, entry-level position where aspiring fashion designers work from home or another location outside of a traditional office or studio. Interns typically assist with tasks such as creating digital sketches, researching trends, and helping with design projects under the guidance of experienced designers. This setup allows students or recent graduates to gain practical industry experience, build their portfolios, and network with professionals, all while working remotely. Remote internships often use collaboration tools and video calls to maintain communication and workflow.

What are the typical responsibilities and collaboration opportunities for a remote fashion design intern?

As a remote fashion design intern, you’ll often assist with digital mood boards, sketching, technical drawings, and trend research, all under the guidance of senior designers. Collaboration is typically conducted via video meetings, project management tools, and shared cloud-based design platforms. You’ll interact regularly with team members, such as pattern makers, merchandisers, and marketing staff, to ensure your creative ideas align with the brand's vision. This remote setup encourages proactive communication, adaptability, and time management skills, which are highly valued in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote fashion designer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Fashion Designer Intern, you need a solid understanding of fashion design principles, garment construction, and trend analysis, often supported by coursework in fashion or related fields. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) and digital collaboration tools is typically required. Creativity, time management, and strong communication skills help interns excel in remote environments and contribute effectively to design teams. • Develop designs through mood boards, sketches, 2D/3D layouts, and material palettes; rendering skills a plus.
  • Create environmental graphics, scenic elements, and merchandising details that bring spaces to life.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to ensure clear communication, quality execution, and smooth delivery.
  • Present work to clients and teammates, incorporating feedback and occasionally traveling for site visits or installs (1-3x per year).

  • SketchUp as a primary tool
  • Proficiency in Figma and/or Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Strong portfolio showing solid fundamentals, attention to detail, inventive design thinking and high-level execution in brand experience work
  • A collaborative team player that is highly motivated, pro-active and positive.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills to meet deadlines across multiple projects in a remote work setting.
  • Illustration, animation or design interests

The salary range for this position is $70,000 - 80,000 annually, plus comprehensive benefits. Salary is determined by a combination of factors that include qualifications, applicable skills, relevant experience and other budgetary considerations such as location/geography.
