Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer, and why are they important?

To succeed as an Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer, you need a solid understanding of digital design concepts, logic circuits, and proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, often gained through coursework or related internships. Familiarity with simulation tools (such as ModelSim or Synopsys VCS) and version control systems is typically required, and knowledge of scripting languages like Python or TCL is a plus. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and identifying design issues. These skills enable accurate verification, efficient teamwork, and the delivery of reliable hardware solutions in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote design verification engineering interns, and how can they overcome them?

Remote design verification engineering interns often face challenges such as limited face-to-face mentorship, time zone differences, and communication barriers with team members. To overcome these, it's important to proactively schedule regular check-ins with mentors, make use of collaborative tools (like Slack or Zoom), and document questions or issues clearly before reaching out for help. Staying organized and setting clear daily or weekly goals can also help interns stay on track and maximize their learning experience in a remote environment.

What does an Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer do?

An Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer assists in verifying and validating the functionality of hardware designs, typically for integrated circuits or systems on chip (SoC). Working remotely, they collaborate with engineering teams to develop test plans, create simulation environments, and run verification tests to ensure designs meet required specifications. Interns in this role learn industry-standard verification methodologies such as UVM and tools like SystemVerilog, and contribute to debugging and documenting design issues. The role provides practical experience in hardware design, verification processes, and remote teamwork within the semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Internship Remote Design Verification Engineer vs Internship Remote Test Engineer?

AspectInternship Remote Design Verification EngineerInternship Remote Test Engineer
Primary FocusVerifying hardware or chip designs against specificationsTesting software or hardware products for functionality and performance
Required SkillsHardware design, verification methodologies, scriptingTesting procedures, scripting, debugging
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, remote collaboration with design teamsTesting labs, remote testing environments
Common Industry UsageSemiconductor, electronics companiesSoftware, electronics, consumer electronics companies

While both roles involve testing and verification, the Design Verification Engineer focuses on ensuring hardware or chip designs meet specifications, whereas the Test Engineer emphasizes testing products for functionality. Internships in both areas provide valuable experience in verification and testing processes within the tech industry.

Job Description

Olsson is seeking a Project Electrical Engineer to join our Federal Engineering & Design Team. This position applies diversified knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices to a broad range of federal projects and independently makes engineering decisions related to electrical design and system integration.

The Project Electrical Engineer is responsible for producing and coordinating electrical designs that support reliable, code-compliant, and constructible solutions for federal clients. This role contributes to project execution through technical design, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and adherence to project scope, schedule, and budget. The Project Electrical Engineer may provide direction and mentorship to less experienced staff while supporting overall project objectives and evolving federal requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs detailed electrical engineering tasks including power distribution, lighting, grounding, and electrical system design for federal engineering and design projects.
  • Prepares electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, technical reports, project cost estimates, and bid-related documentation in compliance with applicable federal standards, codes, and agency-specific requirements.
  • Independently execute moderately complex electrical design assignments, applying sound engineering judgment, problem-solving skills, and risk awareness throughout project execution.
  • Serves as a technical liaison between federal clients, contractors, vendors, and internal engineering teams to coordinate deliverables, resolve technical issues, and support project schedules.
  • Coordinates electrical design efforts with multidisciplinary teams and Olsson project teams to ensure integrated, constructible, and high-quality project outcomes.
  • Works closely with project managers to support project planning, cost control, procurement coordination, progress tracking, and communication of potential technical or schedule-related challenges.
  • Participates in site visits and inspections, provides technical support during installation, and supports testing and commissioning activities to verify electrical systems perform as intended.
  • Reviews, coordinates, and may provide oversight or mentorship to less experienced engineers and technical staff.
  • Supports quality assurance and quality control processes by performing design reviews, field observations, and documentation of design changes, testing results, and key project milestones.
  • Prepares clear and concise project reports and technical summaries for clients, stakeholders, and internal leadership as required.
  • Travel and participation in project charrettes, design reviews, and value engineering conferences.
  • Ensures all electrical designs and installations align with the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA standards, applicable federal agency requirements, and environmental regulations.

Why join us:

  • Contribute to projects that serve national interests and make a difference in communities.
  • Enjoy flexible work arrangements, including remote options, to support your work-life balance.
  • Thrive in a supportive culture that values professional development and teamwork.

Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in electrical design, ideally with federal clients.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD and other relevant design software.
  • Deep understanding of DoD, VA, and federal design standards and processes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and federal stakeholders.

At Olsson, your expertise drives progress on projects that matter. If you're passionate about federal engineering and ready to elevate your career, we want to hear from you.
