The Reliability Engineer has overall responsibility for the engineering needs of the Utilities and Pulp areas, which includes managing maintenance and capital projects and developing department reliability improvement plans primarily revolving around steam related equipment such as boilers, turbines and other pressure vessels. The Mechanical Engineer will identify process and mechanical reliability areas of opportunity, implement creative solutions, support inspection activities, and manage projects, as well as develop overall long-term capital plans and support Operations.
Responsibilities
  1. Must follow Ahlstrom's manufacturing and hygiene processes, procedures and policies, as applicable to the position's areas of responsibility, in order to meet and maintain the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance requirements for each grade of paper.
  2. Manage all capital projects assigned for the area.
  3. Design process/mechanical systems/equipment to provide a useful and safe workplace and to support a predictive-based maintenance environment.
  4. Develop and outline maintenance procedures for process mechanical systems/equipment to ensure maximum service life and utilization.
  5. Advise mill operations personnel about systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes. Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.
  6. Respond to department requests for changes in existing systems/equipment to modify/enhance the system/equipment to obtain desired results in a safe and cost effective manner.
  7. Consult with maintenance personnel to get input on existing systems and practices as well as possible alternatives to using existing conditions and equipment.
  8. Participate in the weekend duty rotation to provide support for facility operations during weekends and holidays.
  9. Provide support and back-up for the process/mechanical engineers in other areas.
  10. Review existing process/mechanical designs and specifications being purchased or fabricated.
  11. Review process/mechanical estimations for equipment and construction.
  12. Provide requested services while meeting safety codes, specifications and budgetary limitations.
  13. Ensure the new systems are compatible with existing systems and operate without causing an overload.
  14. Support efforts of Maintenance to troubleshoot problems.

Requirements
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 2 years' experience in reliability function, internships/co-ops included
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in mechanical engineering and maintenance reliability support in a manufacturing operation, including internships/co-ops
  • Direct experience in pulp and paper mill operations preferred
  • Solid general knowledge of predictive and preventive maintenance methods
  • Experienced with use of CMMS systems, JD Edwards preferred
  • Demonstrated proven reliability management skills and a proven ability to lead capital improvement projects from inception to conclusion
  • Experienced in use of various Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods, weld repair procedures, and boiler inspection requirements
  • Proven reliability improvement results with a history of continuous improvement
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
