Job description

Position Summary

The Controls Engineer I is a site-based role responsible for supporting and improving the reliability of industrial control systems while helping build controls capability within the Maintenance organization. This position combines hands-on troubleshooting of PLC and HMI issues with active participation in training and mentoring maintenance technicians in real time. The Controls Engineer I applies strong knowledge and understanding of PLCs, HMIs, ladder logic, and industrial automation concepts, while continuing to develop experience under the technical guidance of a Senior Controls Engineer. The role also supports the installation, setup, testing, and validation of new or upgraded equipment associated with ongoing capital investments.

What You'll Do as a Controls Engineer
  • Troubleshoot and respond to PLC, HMI, and automation-related issues impacting equipment performance, uptime, and safety.
  • Diagnose control system faults involving PLC logic, I/O, instrumentation, sensors, actuators, and operator interfaces.
  • Partner with Maintenance Technicians during troubleshooting activities to build their controls proficiency.
  • Provide on-the-job training to Maintenance personnel related to PLC/HMI navigation and troubleshooting best practices.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance efforts for control systems, including backups and documentation.
  • Assist the Senior Controls Engineer with capital equipment installation, configuration, testing, and validation.
  • Apply established automation, safety, and HMI standards consistently.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and logic change records.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and IT/OT teams.
The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related discipline.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, and ladder logic.
  • Ability to interpret control logic and electrical schematics.
  • Experience gained through internships, projects, or early-career roles.
  • Comfort working in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in regulated or quality-driven industries preferred.

Pay range for this opportunity is$79,687.50-$103,125.00.This position is eligible for bonus participation.

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
