Job description

Senior Modular Design & Quality Engineer

Headquartered in Conyers, Georgia, Batchelor & Kimball takes pride in partnering with our clients to deliver excellent results from engineering and construction to operations and maintenance. We offer design/build and turnkey construction services, including teaming with selected subcontractors for electrical and general construction.

There's not a lot of BS here, and not a lot of turnover. Good people work at Batchelor & Kimball. We're good at our jobs, and good to each other. We have high expectations because the work is challenging, but we know the most valuable thing about the work is the people who do it. If this sounds like a good fit for you, we'd like to meet you!

If you are looking to continue your career and help the modularization team to thrive, we invite you to apply for this position. Candidates with experience in Mechanical Construction or Consulting Engineering will be strongly considered. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join us in a part-time (less than 30 hours/week), high-impact role supporting our growing modularization and prefabrication efforts-someone who can bring practical design expertise, strong engineering judgment, and a focus on quality to help bridge design, fabrication, and project execution.

What you'll do:

Review and validate mechanical designs, layouts, and specifications to ensure alignment with engineering standards and constructability.

Support the development of conceptual designs into fully defined, buildable modular systems, including racks, skids, and packaged equipment.

Provide engineering input during preconstruction, including design review, preliminary calculations, and technical risk identification.

Partner with estimating and preconstruction teams to translate design concepts into practical scopes, budgets, and execution strategies.

Identify and evaluate prefabrication and modularization opportunities that improve project efficiency, quality, and schedule performance.

Collaborate with VDC, fabrication, and field teams to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturing and installation.

Review shop drawings, spooling packages, and fabrication details for accuracy, completeness, and readiness for production.

Serve as a technical resource to project teams, helping resolve complex design and constructability challenges.

Identify and mitigate risks related to design, sequencing, and execution before they impact field performance.

Support quality across design and fabrication by performing targeted reviews and helping establish practical standards, checklists, and best practices.

Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by capturing lessons learned and helping refine modular design and delivery processes.

What you'll need (minimum qualifications):

Strong knowledge of mechanical systems design, including piping, equipment layouts, and prefabrication or modular construction approaches.

Demonstrated ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and fabrication packages with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, IMC, NFPA) and how they apply in both design and construction environments.

Ability to evaluate constructability and identify risks or inefficiencies in design, fabrication, and installation approaches.

Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across preconstruction, engineering, fabrication, and project teams.

Ability to operate independently and apply sound engineering judgment in a flexible, part-time advisory capacity

Prior work experience and educational requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience

10+ years of experience in mechanical construction, consulting engineering, or a combination of both

Experience supporting or leading prefabrication, modularization, or fabrication-driven project delivery efforts

Background working in project-based environments, collaborating with project managers, estimators, VDC teams, and fabrication operations

Professional credentials such as EIT or PE are preferred but not required

NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The duties described may change at the discretion of management, and the employee may be required to perform duties that are not listed in the job description.

We offer our employees a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package and are always looking for individuals with the talent and skills required to contribute to our continued growth and success. Equal Opportunity Employer/Veterans/Disabled.
